GENTLE MONSTER have announced their Redefinition of Eyewear project, which features digital eyewear via Instagram face filters. Known for their experimental styles and highly conceptual shops that are half-gallery installation, half-retail space, Gentle Monster are now asking: what if sunglasses, but digital?
They have enlisted the help of international artists to come up with the visuals - Daisy Collingridge, Damien Blottier, Esmay Wagmans, Ikeuchi, James T Merry, Liz Sexton, Lyle Remir and Shalva Nikvashvili created masks and then translated them into filters for people to try at home. James T Merry will be familiar to SHOWstudio fans as he is Icelandic singer Björk's co-creative director, and as such has worked with her on artworks and headpieces across albums including Vulnicura and Cornucopia.
With filters and Facetune par for the course on Instagram, experimental and eerie facial distortion is a new area that's gaining ground - however the digital sphere means there's less commitment in considering an outré face mask or piece of eyewear, as you can swap it and change it when the mood suits. Could this be a new avenue for eyewear? GENTLE MONSTER seem to think so!
