Ferragamo's Renaissance Under Maximilian Davis
The Italian luxury brand's latest campaign hones in on Florence, the heart of the Italian Renaissance, for their own cultural rebirth.
The Italian luxury brand's latest campaign hones in on Florence, the heart of the Italian Renaissance, for their own cultural rebirth.
Along the cobbled streets of Florence, visitors to the medieval city will find the Salvatore Ferragamo Museum; a treasure trove of archives detailing the 20th century designer's legacy. Today, Ferragamo is a world-renowned luxury brand, known not just for their shoes - creative director Maximilian Davis recently released his own take on the iconic Rainbow shoe for Pre-Fall - but for their ready-to-wear. Since Davis's debut in 2022, Ferragamo has entered a new chapter, and for their latest campaign, the Florentine brand stages its own Italian Renaissance.
Partnering with The Uffizi, one of the world's most prominent art galleries which houses works by masters of the Renaissance including Leonardo Da Vinci, Piero della Francesca, Sandro Botticelli and Michelangelo - to name just a few - Ferragamo sets itself against a backdrop of works from the 15th and 16th century. Dressed in Davis's signature, angular tailoring, staple accessories like the Hug bag and gold, rope detail sandals, Ferragamo contextualises its new era within that of the Italian Renaissance, arguably the most influential and important art period. 'The Renaissance is hardwired into Florence, and Florence is hardwired into Ferragamo. At this time of a new beginning at the house, it made perfect sense to reclaim the cradle of the Renaissance as our spiritual home, and to harness the deep, artistic spirit of this city to showcase the new collection', Davis explains.
Conceived and creative directed by Ferdinando Verderi, the Renaissance campaign reconceives of Ferragamo's old roots in Hollywood - with early clients including Greta Garbo, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe and later Madonna - and presents a new guard. Creating new portraits of their own, model supers including Vittoria Ceretti, Jessica Stam, Lina Shang and Anok Yai star alongside the campaign's photographer, Tyler Mitchell, plus creators and musicians Kelela and Yasmina Dexter. In the spirit of the creativity which underpinned the renaissance from the 14th-17th centuries, and welcomed in modernity, this latest campaign welcomes in Ferragamo's very own modern era in 2023.
