It's undeniable that Edward Enninful has changed the fashion landscape. A fashion icon in their own right, Enninful is the first male, and first black editor-of-chief of British Vogue. Shaping the cultural zeitgeist and shaking up the status-quo, cover stories for Vogue have featured Adwoa Aboah, a Pride celebration and supermodel Linda Evangelista's return to fashion.
Having carved out a career as a prolific stylist, becoming the youngest ever fashion editor of i-D magazine when he left Goldsmiths' College in London in the 1990s, Enninful has now told his story in his own words. A Visible Man, Enninful's debut memoir, traces his career from a young, gay, working-class refugee from Ghana to global fashion editor. To mark the book's release, a short film conceived by Enninful and filmed by his husband Alex Maxwell of KLOSS Films, features members of the editor's fashionable family reading excerpts from A Visible Man.
A host of Enninful's nearest and dearest, including models Jourdan Dunn, Kate Moss and Kristen McMenamy, actors Sienna Miller, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Omari Douglas, Tilda Swinton, Jodie Turner-Smith and Daniel Kaluuya all don Enninful's uniform of a sharp black suit and white shirt, together with his staple glasses. 'My message is about inclusion and representation and I hope the film and my memoir inspire all to open doors and walk through', Enninful explains.
'This film tells my husband, Edward Enninful’s story. I wanted to suggest his bravery and humour and to present it as a trailer for his book, A Visible Man, narrated by some of the people closest to him. Edward wrote the book throughout lockdown, right under my nose. I knew a lot of the story already, but not all, so this whole thing feels very personal. The book, this film, and all of the people who have come together to bring this to life. By the way, in the trailer, the order of events is jumbled and chopped up so as not to give away too much', explains Maxwell.
