In 2018, a small show at SAMUEL in Chicago saw a myriad of contemporary artists look to John McConnell's now-iconic 1969 design for the Earth Flag as a base for inspiration when it came to designing their own. The series of interpretations formed the exhibition Overview, a not-so-subtle reference to the Overview Effect; a sensation felt by astronauts as they take their first glimpse of the Earth, where they're often struck with thoughts circling around the idea that life on our planet is totally insignificant. Fast forward six years later and art gallery Ginny on Frederick has decided to carry on the tradition of artists interpreting the Earth Flag with a new commission at Sessions Arts Club in London.
Featuring submissions from a select group of international artists Alex Margo Arden, Guendalina Cerruti, Hicham Gardaf, Paul Levack, Hamish Pearch, Andrew Sim and Gray Wielebinski and Lewis Teague Wright, the newly designed Earth Flags are nothing short of a dream. Decorating the elegant yet dilapidated facade of London's heavenly restaurant Sessions Arts Club, the flags not only offer each artist's interpretation of the Overview Effect through their own creative lens but also elevate diners' experiences in the restaurant.
Built on a studio ethos, Sessions Arts Club is more than a restaurant and bar, priding itself as an art and performance space that moves and shifts with the seasons via its curated collective projects. As the urban sanctuary moves into its summer programme, art and food come together in celebration of the finest produce and thought-provoking art.
