Distortion of the classic into the meme-able is a hallmark of Balenciaga. Creative director Demna’s unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of silhouette design—regardless of how comically oversized—has earned him cult status both online and off. With the maison’s S/S 25 show serving as a masterclass in bold, architectural forms, it’s clear that the Georgian designer has no plans to shift course anytime soon. Thankfully, Demna has also envisioned the perfect shoes to complement this larger-than-life aesthetic.

Introducing the 6XL, Balenciaga’s latest trainer that takes sneaker culture to new extremes. Just when we thought we’d become accustomed to the 3XL, which made its runway debut at the ‘Mud Show’ in 2023, Demna is upping the ante with an even more audacious design that challenges conventional footwear. The original 3XL sent the internet into a flurry, easily becoming the most divisive shoe of the season. Nevertheless, it sold out in minutes.

Always embracing extremes, the new 6XL is sure to ruffle some sartorial feathers and get more than a little attention for anyone bold enough to wear them. With its uncanny hourglass shape and layered sole that adds an almost sculptural quality, the 6XL promises to turn heads and spark conversations wherever it goes. It’s a stylistic exaggeration that speaks to Demna’s signature blend of humour and high fashion. With a plushly padded interior and an emphasis on the natural curve, Balenciaga fans can rest assured that it might just be the most comfortable designer trainer on the market.

The shoe’s wackiness is balanced by the subtlety of colourways. The classic Balenciaga-clad army will be most enticed by the brand’s dark black offering, accented with an asphalt finish to provide dimension. It’s the monochromatic white colourway on models Khadim and Lise that steals the spotlight in the campaign photographed by Chris Lenz. For those unable to commit to either end of the spectrum, the 6XL also comes in taupe and grey as a subtle nod to the classic sportswear of the 1990s.

In a world ruled by sensationalism, Balenciaga’s 6XL sneaker is right on the cultural pulse. With its exaggerated proportions, the sneaker reflects the current fascination with the absurd and the meme-worthy, perfectly encapsulating the spirit of our times. As streetwear continues to dominate fashion conversations, the 6XL stands as a testament to Balenciaga's ability to disrupt conventions while sparking dialogue about identity, status, and the boundaries of style.
