The colour grey has long had a reputation for being drab. Falling between two extremes (black and white), there is a dull neutrality to the shade. Grey is also associated with those cloudy days that cast the city in a melancholic shadow, leaving residents yearning for the sun. It also happens to be the signature shade of Christian Dior. Anything but drab, dull, and depressing, Dior’s latest campaign, dreamt up by artistic director Kim Jones, is a celebration of shades of grey.
The monochromatic campaign was captured by Rafael Pavarotti and inspired by the Seine in Paris, and the River Thames, in Jones's native London. Featuring models donning the Dior Men's Winter 2023 collection against an appropriately grey backdrop, the campaign highlights the artistic director’s outerwear and tailoring. Known for their functional simplicity, the grey shades add a layer of poetic simplicity to the utilitarian jackets and oversized tweed coats. Still, it’s the accessories that take centre stage with monogram embossed bags (including a mini version of the iconic Saddle) and hats that will have you ready to take on anything Mother Nature throws your way.
While centred around the colour grey, the Dior Men's Winter 2023 collection might just be one of Jones's strongest since he joined the brand in 2018. Referencing the work of monsieur Dior and his successor Yves Saint Laurent, the collection is rife with couture details. Functional garments like life-vests and fisherman caps are adorned with sequins, embroidery, and seashell brooches showcasing Jones's expert use of Dior's famed ateliers.
