Christie's and Gucci have teamed up to present an auction, which will be open for bidding between 18 - 25 July, to champion artists behind 'explorations in generative art in fashion'. The launch will feature a diverse group of talent already making waves within artistic circles, following a distinct focus on generative systems and artificial intelligence.
The auction will comprise a total of 21 NFTs - all looking to aspects of fashion, art, and technology - by artists including Claire Silver, Emi Kusano, Emily Xie, William Mapan, Zach Lieberman, Botto, Helena Sarin and many more. Manager of digital art sales at Christie’s, Sebastian Sanchez, commented in a statement: 'Christie's is so thrilled to present Future Frequencies, Explorations in Generative Art and Fashion in collaboration with Gucci.' The outputs are completely fascinating, changing the way we can think about using algorithms and data to advance human creativity across fields.'
Instead of forgetting the past in favour of these future systems, the auction bridges the storied past of Gucci with advanced technology at present. As themes range from generative textile studies to algorithmic interpretations of modern design classics, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 handle is one of many examples that has been reworked, fit for an NFT. As different systems have been deployed to stimulate human-like intelligence and artistic output, the results are as pioneering as the artists behind them.
Mimicking the contents of the NFTs, the auctions itself is set to take place not in real life, but on Christie’s 3.0, a fully on-chain auction platform launched by Christie’s last year. The works will also be highlighted on Gucci Art Space, Gucci’s online gallery space spotlighting and empowering artists by providing them with the freedom and latitude to harness uncharted, innovative concepts and expressions at the intersection of fashion and art.
Essentially acting as an invitation to 'avant-garde thinking', the project propels radical new ideas and concepts around fashion’s supporting technologies towards future realities. The auction and exhibition exists alongside Christie’s seventh Art + Tech Summit this summer in New York City.
