Within the canon of British ceramics, Josiah Wedgwood is what we would consider a classic today. Still, when the pioneer first came to prominence, his knack for innovation made him a radical among his peers. Always going against the grain, Wedgwood was the first to develop a new coloured unglazed body now known as jasperware. Keeping their founders’ pioneering spirit alive, Wedgwood is inviting today’s trailblazers and industry disruptors to reimagine the brand’s creative codes. The first is none other than London-based fashion designer Charles Jeffrey.
Already known for their subversive approach to design, and unapologetic boldness, Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY is the perfect candidate to kick off this new project by the over two century-year-old brand. Staying true to Wedgwood's radical origins, Jeffrey has created a collection of limited-edition, individually decorated and hand-glazed pieces. Each piece is individually decorated in the designer’s bold illustrative style using abstract painting techniques and vibrant colours that harken to his daring designs. Looking to reduce waste, the collection only uses pre-loved pieces of jasperware.
‘It simply had to be Charles to start this new movement. Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY reflects a freedom of expression, optimism and authenticity in his multidisciplinary approach which juxtaposes perfectly with Wedgwood’s iconic jasperware,’ says Wedgwood's creative director Alice Bastin.
Merging his love of design and music — last year Jeffrey released his debut collaborative album Neko — the designer has teamed up with Robert Fox and Tom Furse on the campaign accompanying his Wedgwood collection. The mod-inspired music video dubbed ‘Furnace The World’, sees the designer and his musical companions disrupt the Wedgwood factories with their radical punk vocals.
‘Collaborating with Wedgwood has been an incredible journey which allowed us to fuse music, art and craftsmanship into a bold and transformative experience. We not only had the opportunity to reimagine Wedgwood’s iconic jasperware but also to infuse it with our own distinctive creative voice. Upcycling pre-loved Wedgwood jasperware became a medium for us to breathe new life into these cherished pieces, adding a unique touch and vibrant, expressive energy,’ says Jeffrey.
