Championing the talents of tomorrow, the British Fashion Council’s NEWGEN initiative has been supporting burgeoning brands since it was first introduced in 1993. In the decades since, some of the biggest names in fashion like Christopher Kane, Kim Jones and Jonathan Anderson have received support from NEWGEN in bringing their collections to life through financial grants, individual mentoring and showcasing opportunities. Well, today the BFC have announced the latest roster of designers joining the ranks, just in time to celebrate the programme's 30th anniversary.
For the 2023/24 season, Aaron Esh, Derrick, Kazna Asker, The Winter House, and Tolu Coker are the newest recipients of the Alexander McQueen sponsored initiative. A panel of industry experts, including Vogue fashion critic Sarah Mower, creative director Sarah Burton, and poet Wilson Oryema, decided on the newcomers from a shortlist of designers across womenswear, menswear and accessories. They’re joining the likes of Chet Lo, Conner Ives, Paolo Carzana, and ikon-1 designer Leo Carlton.
'Celebrating this year's recipients is all the more exciting in light of the 30th anniversary of the initiative,' says chief executive of The British Fashion Council Caroline Rush. 'We are focused on creating an environment for creative and innovative businesses to succeed, and continue to nurture socially responsive and dynamic designers at the zeitgeist of British culture,'
