Founded by Mumi Haiati in 2019, Berlin's Reference Festival celebrates the best in the arts, performance, music and film from the city. On until 13 September, this year's event - titled Infinitude - marks the 6th edition of the Germanic festival. Berlin's most intriguing venues and spaces have been taken over to house some of the art on display, which also activates the premises of the event's collaborator, the Schinkel Pavillon (the infamous first floor of Borchardt has also been transformed).
Setting out with the intention of finding a middle ground between the ever-cohesive worlds of fashion and art, the festival's exhibiting artists all work across a variety of disciplines to communicate their shared point of view; one which falls in line with this year's theme of continuity and renewal reflected in the event's subsequent title. 'Infinitude as a title describes a reflection on the circularity of the now' states the festival's press release. 'It stands for the state of the world and illustrates that the future is equal to progress, and evolution. To succeed, preservation is equally important (in comparison) to new ideas'.
Open to the public until next Tuesday, various events that make up the festival include a live performance and film premiere by Michèle Lamy and other creatives, followed by a private dinner and talk at Borchardt's infamous 1. A screening of Miles Greenberg's new video work Fountain, hosted by the Julia Stoschek Collection will also be on display next to an interdisciplinary exhibition featuring work by 'boundary-pushing' artists.
