Vegans beware because leather isn’t going out of fashion anytime soon. At least that’s what At.Kollektive is betting on. Since it was launched last year, the innovative initiative has been looking to reshape the industry with its collaborative approach. Back for its second season, the pioneering project sees some of today’s greatest talents including Natacha Ramsay-Levi, Isaac Reina, Kostas Murkudis, and Bianca Saunders creating exclusive desires from leather.

At.Kollektive season 2

Spearheaded by ECCO Leather, the Danish leather company provided materials to the cohort of design talents in order to create a meticulously crafted collection. With access to some of the world’s best leather and leather-working ateliers, each designer has been tasked with reimagining the material in new and exciting ways. With each collection focusing on a range of key pieces from garments, to bags and footwear, at the core of the project is highlighting the qualities of leather that make it a tried and true material in fashion.

No stranger to working with leather, Parisian designer Natacha Ramsey-Levi (who was previously the creative director of Chloé) has presented a line-up of playful footwear. From heeled sneakers to flats and boots, the creative plays with proportion, form and function. To contrast the naturally rugged qualities of leather she's also partnered up with Tchane Okuyan to create bold prints of bright neon.

Spanish designer Isaac Reina took a more subtle approach with her footwear opting to create styles out of a single piece of leather. To create as few seams as possible, the designer relies on folding which results in minimal, refined trainers, sandals, and curved block heels. Inspired by the long history of handcrafted leather accessories from Japan, Reina also crafted a tote and shoulder bag that can be expanded and folded depending on the wearer's needs.

Inspired by his youth in East Germany, Kostas Murkudis created three-dimensional pieces defined by curves and architectural domes and spheres. Along with the city's architecture, Murkudis was inspired by the subcultures he was surrounded by. This was most evident in the colour palette of dusty pink reminiscent of punk and goth styles.

Last but not least, London's very own Bianca Saunders is back with a focus on leather's suppleness and malleability. Using soft leather to craft loafers and boots, Saunders highlights the elegance of how the material folds and drapes. As for garments, the menswear master has crafted coats and trousers. Keeping in line with her established visual language, jackets are complete with exaggerated collars. We can only hope she applies what she's learned at At.Kollektive to her own label.
