Following in the footsteps of many contemporary fashion designers, including Rei Kawakubo and Roksanda, the creative director of Alaïa Pieter Mulier has turned his hand to designing costumes for the Opera de Paris.
Conceiving the costumes for choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber's Paris Opera debut Pit - described by Smith as a metaphorical work that 'is not only a physical place but a semantic one—pitting people against each other, and being in the pits', the occasion marks a first for Mulier, who has never before designed costumes for the ballet.
Employing the skills and savoir-faire of the Alaïa atelier, Mulier, inspired by the free movements of dancers, made supple armours from some of the house's iconic materials, all matching the curves of the dancers' shapes and silhouettes as their bodies are enhanced, exalted, celebrated.
