Y/Project and sportswear? These weren't two words we were expecting to hear in the same sentence, but with high fashion brands collaborating with sportswear brands left, right, and centre – think Wales Bonner X Adidas Originals, or Matthew Williams X Nike – maybe this fit makes sense after all.

Ever since Belgian designer Glenn Martens was appointed creative director of Y/Project in 2013, he has carved out a playful, conceptual identity for the Parisian brand, replete with exaggerated silhouettes stretched to outlandish proportions.

To celebrate Fila's 110th anniversary, the collaboration between the pair will be unveiled during Paris Fashion Week at the upcoming Y/Project fashion show on June 27th at 4pm local time. 'I see this collaboration, really, as a marriage of Y/PROJECT’s experimental spirit and FILA’s innovative drive grounded in sportswear,' said Martens. 'The process was as easy as it was fun, and it allowed me to openly explore a streetwear direction that felt new. There is a fresh, happy vibe to the endeavour that I think is right for this moment.'

Martens has warped Fila staples like T-shirts, hoodies, polo neck dresses, trainers, windbreakers and tennis bags into new pieces exuding his signature quirkiness. Each piece can be worn multiple ways – double collars, asymmetrical buttoning and double sweats – while the pair of juxtaposed logos sit side by side, emblazoned on a range of pieces.

The impending collaboration is impressive, given the fact that Martens has plenty on his plate. After joining Diesel as artistic director in October 2020, he has since been on a mission to revive the ailing Italian denim brand. His first Diesel campaign last year featured models with larger-than-life smiles going about their day to day tasks with a taut, unsettling sense of happiness. Tune into the Diesel show at Milan Fashion Week on Monday 21st June, 2pm local time to watch his first on-schedule collection for the brand.

Y/Project X FILA will be sold starting from March 2022 in selected retailers and on www.yproject.fr
