Big or small, dirty or clean, soft or super rough, we’ll take Willy any way—Willy Chavarria, that is. While we can hardly contain our excitement (or Eiffel Tower-related dreams) for his upcoming menswear show in Paris on 24 January, thankfully the Mexican-American designer’s new XXX-rated collaboration is keeping us entertained in the meantime. Teaming up with Latino Fan Club, a New York-based gay porn studio founded in 1985, the capsule includes clothing, an NSFW calendar, and a zine titled Big Willy, which celebrates queer Latin identities. There’s even a Dirty Willy underwear line featuring boxer briefs, tank tops, jockstraps, and not-so-white tighty-whities that come pre-distressed with the suggestion of sweat stains.

Dirty Willy Zine

While the steamy collaboration offers plenty of pulse-raising imagery and opportunities for sexual innuendos, it’s underscored by Chavarria’s signature subversive style. In the zine, a model is bound and tied by a crucifix necklace, the cross dangling in front of their butt crack. Shot by Marco Ovando and remastered by Jess Cuevas, the black-and-white image is overlaid with brownish splatters and stains. Seemingly sacrosanct religious imagery is placed into an erotic and delightfully sinful context, highlighting Christianity’s fraught relationship with homosexuality—with many denominations condemning LGBTQIA+ people.

XXX Calendar

Outrageous and sexy, the collection recalls the sensitivity and activism that underpin Chavarria’s brand and the universe he’s building around it. Rosaries and crosses worn by the XXX Calendar pin-ups evoke themes from his S/S 23 fashion show Please Rise, which grappled with the pain and guilt experienced by queer people raised within the Church. Sunday best was reimagined, with fantastic suiting featuring voluminous trousers and exaggerated lapels nodding to zoot suits. It’s emblematic of Chavarria’s subversive approach to menswear, reinterpreting hypermasculine archetypes through a gauzy lens. ‘For me, I have always liked the idea of really romanticising masculinity and really making it look almost more feminine so it does become more gentle,’ Chavarria told SHOWstudio in 2023.

The capsule launches exclusively at Dover Street Market in Los Angeles and New York, complete with a banana-yellow installation recalling seedy movie rental stores. An attention-grabbing beacon that welcomes saints and sinners alike, it’s symbolic of how Chavarria’s brand has created space for queer people of colour.
