'Try not to be led by what other people are doing. You should pay attention to what they're doing but be thinking; 'that's what they're doing, so this is what I'll do', is the sage advice Sir Paul Smith is offering this year's applicants for the 2025 Winsor & Newton and Paul Smith’s Foundation International Art Prize. This year's submission theme is fittingly titled ‘Defining your point of view’. Think it a bit on the nose? Not if you’re an artist.
Building on last year's theme, which read more like a mission statement, ‘Find inspiration everywhere, if you can't, please look again’, this year, the International Art Prize is asking for young artists based in six specific cities to apply: London, New York, Copenhagen, Shanghai, Antwerp, Nottingham. And if they need any sound advice, you ask? Paul Smith's Foundation have just the source they can turn to, With Artists, the short film that premiered at The Cinema at Selfridges earlier this year featuring artists Brittni Warshaw and Matthieu Livrieri.
Although the competition's judges are yet to be announced, there is a certified deadline for submitters so if you're reading this while thinking of applying, take note of the deadline: 10 April, 2025. Winners will be given the opportunity to have their final work exhibited in a Paul Smith store and group show as well as access to an international network of industry leaders. £1000 worth of Winsor & Newton art materials as well as a £1000 bursary from Paul Smith's Foundation will also be granted.
Entries to the International Art Prize 2025 close on 10 April 2025. Click here for more details.
