Artist

Zandile Tshabalala is a Soweto-born painter.

Tshabalala graduated with a BA degree in Fine Art from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa in 2022.

Her work embraces narratives celebrating the inclusion of black women within art which are inspired by the lack of or displacement of black women within 19th century western art. She looks to painters such as Kerry James Marshall, Njideka Akunyilli-Crosby, Mickalene Thomas and Henri Rousseau to communicate these ideals.

By solely working with acrylic on canvas, Tshabalala tackles the complexitIes of being a black woman using not only trauma as a starting point but history, imaginatIon, joy, love and time-based theories.
