Zac Posen

Fashion Designer

Zac Posen is an American fashion designer. Posen was born in New York in 1980 and attended St Ann's School for the Arts in Brooklyn. He began a BA in womenswear at Central Saint Martins in 1999, while also cultivating a private client list. His label became so successful he abandoned study in 2001 to running his label, initially out of his parents home. Gaining press notoriety and creating huge anticipation for his debut catwalk show, shown for Spring-Summer 2002, Zac Posen drew further critical acclaim and several awards. Posen spent two years as an intern at the Metropolitan Museum's Costume Institute, where his study of the Vionnet and Dior originals left him with a keen sense of fashion history, which informs many of his techniques: ruffled satin, fishtail hemlines, swooping necklines and bias-cut silhouettes.

Two years following his first collection, he was awarded one of fashion's most prestigious honours, Swarovski's The Perry Ellis Award for Womenswear by the CFDA. In 2015, Zac Posen was also awarded Designer of the Year by Women's Wear Daily and Variety magazine.

In 2019, House of Z and Z Spoke, the fashion brand owners of Posen's company, announced an immediate closure of the label.
