Yoon Ahn
Designer
Yoon Ahn is a jewellery designer, known for collaborating with her Japanese rapper husband Verbal on jewellery design under the label Ambush.
Though she was born in Korea, Yoon Ahn grew up in Seattle, and started her career studying graphic design at the University of Boston, where she met Verbal, who was studying Philosophy and Marketing.
Shortly after leaving Boston for Tokyo in 1998, Verbal debuted in hip hop group M-Flo and began his career in the music industry. Ahn prompted Verbal to replace his traditionally hip-hop baggy clothes for brands he loved like Raf Simons and Dior Homme, in a move that has been said to have spearheaded the movement of hip-hop artists engaging in the concept of high-fashion brands. Quickly the couple started to play around with ideas with jewellery designers they knew in Tokyo - stores then began to ask to buy their designs. In 2002, the duo created Ambush Design Company as a design outlet for Ahn, under which she designed album artwork for a number of artists, including Verbal. In 2004, they founded a couture jewellery line called Antonio Murphy & Astro.
In 2008, they established their second line, Ambush, which was an instant success. Initially designing giant gold chains, gold metal chokers and handmade gold chain-mail hoodies, the line quickly developed more conceptual themes and titles for each collection, such as Nomad or Holy Mountain. Their A/W 15 collection was shown outside of Japan for the first time at the Joyce Gallery in Hong Kong.
In 2018, Ahn was appointed jewellery designer for Dior Homme, under Kim Jones.
