Shao Yen Chen

Fashion Designer

Shao Yen Chen is a fashion designer and founded of London-based womenswear label Shao Yen. Chen was born in Yilan, Taiwan. He moved to London to study at Central Saint Martins in 2003. During his studies, he interned with Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan, and was awarded the 2009 Fashion Weekend/Le Vif Award in Brussels, Belgium for his BA graduation collection. He started his own label Shao Yen after graduating from the MA Fashion Knitwear course in 2010.

Shao Yen's trademark is his experimentation with unconventional materials and form. He continued to present at London Fashion Week following his first appearance on schedule as part of the Central Saint Martins MA show during Autumn/Winter 2010. In February 2011, he was invited to curate a display window for Selfridges department store in London, as part of their 'Bright Young Things' project. Shao Yen was also featured in Nicola Formichetti's pop up shop in New York in September 2011, and has created a bespoke dress for Icelandic singer Björk.
