Reiner Holzemer
Director
Born in Gemünden (1958), Reiner Holzemer studied drama and social sciences in Erlangen. He works as a self-taught author, director, cameraman and editor of documentaries.
Holzemer has become well known for his 'cinematic portraits' which recount the histories’ of remarkable individuals. He has developed and produced more than 30 documentary films and artist portraits, including William Eggleston, Juergen Teller, August Sander, Walker Evans, René Burri, Robert Lebeck, Thomas Höpker, Magnum Photos, Caroline Link and Dries Van Noten. These portraits have been shown at influential museums globally, including the Metropolitan Museum of Arts in NYC.
More commercially, since 1993, Holzemer has conceived, developed and directed more than 200 commercials on a national and international base. In 2015, Reiner Holzemer followed fashion designer Dries Van Noten for a whole year. He witnesses the creative process that leads to 4 collections, accumulating in Dries (2017). In 2016, in collaboration with the co-writer Christian Friedl and commissioned by BR, Reiner Holzemer has embarked on a 10-year long project: the transformation and renovation of the German Museum in Munich.
Holzemer regularly participates in important German documentary film festivals, such as the Internationalen Filmfestspielen, Berlin. In 1999, Holzemer was awarded the the city of Nuremberg's Culture Grant, and has been a member of the German Society for Photography since 2002.
2019 saw Holzemer release a documentary on the elusive Belgian fashion designer Martin Margiela, entitled Martin Margiela: In His Own Words.
