Mame Kurogouchi
Fashion Designer
Brand
Mame Kurogouchi is a womenswear label designed by Maiko Kurogouchi. The name comes from the Japanese word 'mame', meaning 'bean' in English; also a childhood moniker of the designer. Founded in 2010, the ready-to-wear brand is based in Tokyo and is dedicated to Japanese craftsmanship. In November 2019, Kurogouchi founded a garment manufacturing business with Taro Horiuchi called Atelier Project to elevate 'Made in Japan'.
Working alongside rural artisans, the Nagano-born designer harnesses arcane techniques to craft elaborate designs inspired by vintage Japanese clothes, paintings, and ceramics, and her collections are largely inspired by her travels across Japan.
Mame Kurogouchi is stocked by retailers including SSENSE, Matches Fashion and Moda Operandi. In March 2020, the brand released a capsule collection with Tod's.
