Jens Laugesen

Fashion Designer

Fashion designer Jens Laugesen was born in Denmark in 1967. Arriving in Paris in 1987, he studied haute couture design at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, graduating in 1991. He worked as a freelance fashion journalist before returning in 1994 to take a Master's degree in Fashion Management at the Institut Français de la Mode. Laugesen subsequently worked for a number of internationally-renowned design houses in Paris before relocating to London in 2000 to study MA Fashion (Womenswear) at Central Saint Martins under the late Louise Wilson. His distinction-graded graduate collection was chosen by Paris boutique Maria Luisa to be exhibited in the windows of the store during haute couture week in July 2002.

His first runway presentation was held in September 2002 as part of Fashion East, supported by Channel 4 TV and the Old Truman Breweries. In February 2003 he was awarded the Topshop New Generation Award which allowed him to present his A/W 03 collection Ground Zero 02, as part of the official London Fashion Week schedule. He was awarded the prize a further two times, the maximum number of wins permitted. Since 2003, Laugesen has designed a succesful tailored capsule collection for Topshop, and is currently also teaching in both Women's and Menswear Fashion on the MA Course at Central Saint Martins. A coat from his S/S 06 collection was selected to appear in the Anna Piaggi Fashion-iology exhibition at the V&A in London.

In 2006, Jens Laugesen became the first London designer to be awarded the Andam Fashion Award, with financial support by LVMH and L'Oréal, allowing him to present his A/W 07 collection in Paris with an exhibition at the Musée des Arts Decoratifs, in the Louvre. Other awards included the British Fashion Council's FASHION FORWARD award, entailing financial support from Westfield London for two consecutive seasons, and DANSK Designer of the Year in March 2008 in his native Denmark.

In 2017 Jens Laugesen was awarded a prize from Danish Arts Foundation that allowed him to relaunch his brand and showcase the EDEN The Woman who fell to Earth film in London Fashion week. He was also awarded the IDA design award first prize in Avant-garde in 2018. With further funding from the Danish Arts Foundation he produced and showcased at Copenhagen Fashion Week in January 2019 in an immersive installation, showcasing a new fashion film PERSONA DOUBLE created by Thurstan Redding and Anders Sølvsten Thomsen for RE-EDITION magazine alongside collaborative projects with S.N.S. HERNING, SAGA FURS and KVADRAT.

Jens Laugesen has since 2008 been a strategic design consultant for international brands including Calvin Klein Collection and J Mendel in New York, LG Fashion Corp in Seoul and Net-a-Porter in London.
