IMMA/MESS

Performance Artist

IMMA/MESS was a performance alias used by the artist Jarrod Kentrell. Growing up in Montgomery, Alabama, Kentrell moved to New York to join the African-American dance troupe Alvin Ailey. He was further trained at a Conservatory in Connecticut, in Holland, and eventually was offered a training position with Atlanta Ballet.

Disenchanted with dance, Kentrell applied to Parsons and Central Saint Martins, graduating with honours in Fine Art, specialising in Performance Art. His persona as IMMA/MESS was a compilation of his childhood memories and references, combined with the influence of Leigh Bowery, Grace Jones, Cindy Sherman and John Waters.
