Alexander James
Painter
Alexander James is a London-based painter.
James' work consumes and combines moments of history, recent and ancient, in contrasting pastel and electric tones on large-scale canvases. He often treats the canvas as his diary, translating the material fragments he is drawn to, letters, photographs, memorabilia, and ancient artefacts, with conversations, memories, and inherited emotions.
James holds a BA in Illustration from Camberwell College of Arts. He has been involved in multiple group exhibitions, including Face to Face: A Celebration of Portraiture at Marlborough Gallery (2023) with a subsequent solo exhibition at the gallery titled Tuck Shop for the Wicked that same year.
Further group shows include Once Upon a Time in Mayfair at Phillips (2022), London; On the Outside Looking In at Room 57 Gallery, New York; and the Victoria & Albert Museum, Dundee (2022); Analogous at Daniel Benjamin Gallery (2022); Grand Opening at Super Zoom, Paris (2022); Love Is The Devil at Marlborough Gallery (2021); BFAMI, Christies (2020); It’s Not Just a Portrait, Badr El Jundi Gallery Benhavis, A’NICA Residency, Milan (2020); I, Science at The Blyth Gallery at Imperial College (2017); and solo shows including Look What The Cat Dragged In, Roman Road (2019); Hybolised Tropic, sponsored by Outset Art Foundation (2018).
