assume vivid astro focus is both an alias of Brazilian-born New York-based artist Eli Sudbrack, and the name of an international group of visual and performance artists, with French multimedia artist Christophe Hamaide-Pierson one of the main collaborators.
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1968, Sudbrack grew up during the US-sponsored military dictatorship of Brazil that lasted from 1964-1980. His works are inspired by their childhood exposure to the influx of American popular culture on the already culturally diverse Brazilian culture. As such, avaf's work assimilates a wide range of aesthetic tendencies into a varied practice and output. Avaf completed a Bachelor's degree in Communication Studies, Cinema, Publicity and Advertising at Pontificia Universidade Catolica (Rio de Janeiro) in 1992, and subsequently moved to the US to study at the International Centre of Photography, New York, where he is still predominantly based.
His collage aesthetic is represented through multiple media, including stickers, masks, t-shirts, drawings, tattoos, clothing, photography, film programmes and projections. These works are most often instigated as collaborations with other like-minded artists and collectives such as Los Super Elegantes, Joseph Ari Loi (aka JK5) and Slava Mogutin.
In 2001, avaf became a collective. A collaboration with Los Super Elegantes for the 2004 Frieze Art Fair in London, entitled Make it With You: The Slow Dance Club, involved a specially constructed room with rotating door, in which visitors were encouraged to dance to romantic music in its club-like environment.
Avaf has created a range of handbags, each covered in one section of a larger print. Sudbrack's work has been exhibited in Globas Sonda, a group show in the Museo de Arte Contemporaneo de Castilla y Leon, Spain.
As a collective, avaf created work for the New York Times: T magazine in 2009.
