Polka dots are back in the big business: so claimed Escada at their show on Sunday. Yesterday, Marc Jacobs declared exactly the same - the designer himself took his bow in a polka dotted shirt. His S/S 19 collection was filled with polka-dots; collars, sleeves, skirts, tops and oversized flower-draped waistbands were all adorned with the beloved dots. Not only was it polka dot galore, the number of ruffles being paraded down the runway was almost unprecedented.
As tacky as it may sound, it felt refreshing after a #NYFW without much excitement. The oversized shapes were overwhelming on the cast of size zero models and at times it did seem like a group of girls at a slumber party dressing up in their mom’s clothes. The styling - as always by Katie Grand of Love Magazine - too emphasized this notion.
As only Marc Jacobs can, all the elements combined seemed to work as a commentary on the current state of the fashion industry; all business and no fun. It almost reminds one of the Sex and the City episode 'SPLASH!' where Lexi Featherston (played by Kristen Johnston) declares the death of New York and exclaims to a crowd of horrified onlookers 'No one is fun any more… I am so bored I could die,' before she trips on her heel and falls out of the window.
Well Jacobs won’t do the latter, fortunately, but one thing is for sure after this collection: he seems determined to make New York Fashion week fun and interesting again by keeping editors on their toes and always taking the route of the unexpected.
