The Alexander Wang show had a slow start last night. We sat - waiting, trap music blasting - against a rail in an empty lot in Bushwick as Kardashians rolled up and paps snapped Natasha Poly and Anwar Hadid across the way. An hour in (long after a few hecklers from a nearby building yelled to get started), the #Wangfest party bus arrived. It had been making its way around the city, giving two shows downtown for the public.

Kaia Gerber opened in a slinky, crystal-detailed number. This felt like old-school Wang: sexy, a little grungy, nothing revolutionary but very downtown desirable. The loose tailored offerings - fit with exposed zippers that felt more androgynous cool than come hither - were a standout. Leather leggings were melded with denim cut-offs. There was oversized shredded baby blue denim and a cream lace dress, roughed up with a leather bustier. Nineties silhouettes were big - Cher Horowitz, were she a little sportier, could be easily envisioned stepping out in one of the designer’s mini dresses. The girls at the end came out with party hats topping off their looks - 'After After Party,' 'Secret Location,' and 'Party Animal' read a few. At the end of the day, Wang - the clothes and the man - is really about a quality party. Behind the barricade, tequila flowed, a bouncy castle emerged, and models danced to performances by Cardi B and Ja Rule and Ashanti. It’s a collection for the surface, and it doesn’t pretend to be anything else.
