On the way over to West Street for the Y3 show, a few things happened. 1) There was a celebrity frenzied mob around the entrance to Balthazar waiting for the Beckhams. When the flashbulbs went off there was halo surrounding the Soho eatery. 2) Fireworks exploded over the West Side Highway, nearby the show space with a loud shot as the queuing mass looked skyward. It seemed Beckham had brought the excitement with him as he arrived to sit front row for the 10th anniversary show of the Adidas collaborative line with Yohji Yamamoto.
The venue was outfitted with a sculpted prism wall along the runway, which glowed black and white at first, only to start to pulsate in colour as the looks followed suit. There were shots of blue and then a surprising tropical print - were they lotuses? - running throughout the collection. It was, if nothing else, a very long show, but one filled with the sporty, functional pieces that are at the label's core. Yamamoto is one very cool guy. Even better than Beckham was the designer himself appearing for a rare finale bow.
