Fashion Film: Christian Dior A/W 20 Haute Couture
'Surrealist images manage to make visible what is in itself invisible. I’m interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exrocising uncertainty about the future' Maria Grazia Chiuri, artistic director Dior.
Discover the Dior A/W 20 haute couture collection in an exclusive film by Italian director Matteo Garrone. Miniature gowns evoke the magic of the Théâtre de la Mode touring exhibition in Paris, which captivated a beauty-deprived public in Europe and the US in 1945-46 as couture houses responded to fabric rationing by promoting their creations in a travelling show of doll-sized samples. Exploring the fantasy of couture further, Garrone's film transports the dresses via a magical trunk embodying 30 Avenue Montaigne, to a mythical forest full of nymphs and other-worldly creatures.
This season, Chiuri was looking to female Surrealist artists Lee Miller, Dora Maar and Jacqueline Lamba, transcending the role of the muse to reach a powerful femininity. The Surrealists’ female body also conjures a reinterpretation of the miniature mannequin, a poetic emblem at the heart of the couture universe.
