Opening Ceremony is a brand rooted in friendship, starting, of course, with that between Humberto Leon and Carol Lim and continuing with their collaborations throughout the years with likeminded souls. Last night’s presentation in Chelsea was rather unexpected because it was so singularly focused on one such friend, the director Spike Jonze. The walls of the gallery were covered with Jonze’s photography, all previously unseen and available for our viewing pleasure for one night only. Even if they often stopped you from looking at what the models were wearing (skaters, Sonic Youth, Bjork, the Beastie Boys, Kurt, Drew, Chloe, Sofia!) they acted as a magnified inspiration board.
The exhibition was called Please Use Your Best Judgement, but you’ll pretty much want every piece on display, if not for your walls then definitely for your wardrobe. Gorgeous camel wrap coats and flared trousers, cut just short enough for the patent mid-calf boots to shine, long ribbed tank knits layered under Kodak branded t-shirts and long, softly pleated skirts, tiger striped fur and even a digital rendering on a top and skirt of Jonze’s collage of Nineties cult girl-crushes, adorned with sequins. A beautiful moment, brought to you by some good friends and Kodak!
