An overblown portrait of Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, or Marie Antoinette lover of Manolo Blahnik shoes and cupcakes to you and I, with a big pink spray-paint blot covering her pretty powdered face, greeted guests at this morning’s Sister by Sibling show at the ICA. Was that a sign that the knitwear trio, Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery, would introduce some Versailles opulence into their magic mix? Not quite – it turns out another misunderstood gal, Paula Yates, was their muse this season. The magic was still there, of course, but it didn’t hail from France or Austria. It was English to the core – like Paula. 'She was sexy and flirtatious, beautiful and clever and also a rarity since women loved her too', the designers said in their show notes. 'She must have been doing something right!' The same can be said for Sibling too – their knits sell like hot cakes and at a time when knitwear wizardry is at the forefront of Planet Fashion, these three are Hogwarts’ brightest.

Cara opened the show (if you’re asking 'Cara who?' then what are you doing here?) wearing a black sweater with Wys’ Antoinette and a knitted floppy beret. A perfect little twinset followed with floral embroidery and a crocket skirt – a look perfect for tea with granny that at the hands of Sibling managed to stay cool. 'If it’s spotted it needs sparkle' Sibling’s mantra for the season goes and there was plenty of that in a little sequined polo dress but it was the Fair Isle knits in Scottish lamb’s wool that was new here, great as a matching jumper and long pencil skirt. A jet-black sweater and skirt stitched with strips of fox fur showcased their skills and so did the out-of-control hand-crocheted floral tops edged with fur. Ms Delevigne’s pretty face was nearly lost amid the fur collar and matching giant beret. Lose her head she did not.
