Originally a table tennis club based in Devon
SW England, Backhand was reborn as an English
menswear collection in 2003, some 15 years after
the maverick rural team played their last overseas
match. Created from the desire to provide innovative
casualwear with a reflective nod to the European
styles of the 70s and 80s and an appreciation
of English modernism, the collection is now entering
its 6th season. From a starting point of ‘indoor
sportswear’ centred around table tennis polo shirts,
the range now includes knitwear, shirting and
outerwear with the bulk of fabric and production
all sourced in Great Britain. Backhand eschews
the American clothing model of workwear and
synthetic sportswear and hence will never produce
jeans or oversized leisure wear. The carefully
nurtured collection is now sold in some of
the leading boutiques around the world and
championed by discerning journalists.
