ERIN LEWIS 2008 - NOWHERE TO HIDE
> > In this age of information, there is nowhere to hide.
> > Our every move can be tracked: CCTV, oystercards, credit cards, mobile phonesâ¦
> > All your personal details can be found on a database at the touch of a button. Your identity can be stolen over wireless connections, unseen, undetected, an invisible threat.
> > Individuality is at risk from imitation, youth cultures can replicate the past. Technology allows for anyone to become anything, anyone, anywhere at anytime.
> > Uncertainty breeds fear.
> > Fear of detection.
> > Subculture is saturated in recognisable symbols. In the push to create the ânewâ there emerges a wave of âno-tracersâ, using only shapes and experiments with light to define. Bands can reference simply âsoundâ and describe their genre as âother/other/otherâ. Today the sense of belonging to a tribe can evolve from actually not belonging to anything at all.
> > As Pico Iyer describes the condition of our time,
â if nowhere is home, everywhere isâ¦â
> > âNOWHERE TO HIDEâ proceeds to explore the possibilities of disrupting visibility. Creating illusion based on defence systems employed by the armed forces such as stealth, dazzle paint and camouflage.
> > Invisibility has been romanticised for centuries, illustrated in both ancient myth and science fiction. Warriors with mythological invisibility helmets to protect them. Star-Trek Romulan warriors using cloaking devices to hide starships.
> > A powerful, gallant figure is taken from these warriors with strong armoured shoulders, at times hidden beneath cloaks. Sharp cuts mimic the structures of stealth technology, and contrasting directional cutting inspired by dazzle paint designs. Fabrics mix old and new, tweed woven with reflective filament, and camouflage print developed into a hidden text design.
> > A call for knights in shining armour.
