Rachel de Joode follows a long and interesting photographic tradition. With her portraiture, she combines studio contrivance with deep, realistic examinations of her subjects. Her props and styling only serve to enhance and exploit characteristic flaws, strengths, and ironies.
Even though De Joode works in diverse fields (photography, art, design), there is a recurring theme apparent in all of them the mystification of everyday life.
As an 'all round Life-Style scientist' she investigates the collective memory of our time, pointing out and magnifying the absurd of contemporary culture. Seeking a balance between the etheral world of the unconsious and the rationality of reason, her work characterized as Magic Realism of the new century.
'Overall in my work I use tokens of our daily life, for example coffee cups, carpet spray, sportsocks, pre-sliced bread, post-it, shoulder pads, venetian blinds or remote controls. I portray these modern symbols metaphorically and redefine them in very diverse ways, deconstructing common life in contemporary times.'
De Joode drags us into her Magical Realistic fantasy worlds, her amazing art takes you on a strange trip to the other side of things.
