My photographic practice is based upon spontaneity and experimentation. Being in the right place at the right time with a camera to hand. I attempt to present alternative representations along the themes of environment and identity.
We all take our environment for granted, and despite being constantly aware of our surroundings, do we ever really stop and look? Perhaps occasionally. But generally we run around with blinkers on never looking up and barely looking around. My work attempts to highlight two things. Firstly the things we filter out; the mess, the mundane and the quirks and charms which can be found amongst them.
Then there are the things we do notice. The things people travel from all over the world to see. The landmarks which are photographed a hundred times a day. With these subjects in mind, I take common tourist images as a reference point and attempted to reinterpret them.
Anyone who knows me will be aware of his aversion to appearing in front of the camera. It is this personal aversion which has led me to experiment and move away from a more traditional approach to portraiture. Portraits are far more than a face, eyes, nose and a mouth. They are a reflection of a character. A reaction to a situation and state of mind of those in front and behind the camera.
