Voice Box is a live audio installation being created inside the SHOWstudio premises over the festive period by you, the SHOWstudio viewer base. Reliant upon audience participation for its success, the project asks viewers to make a voice or sound recording via telephone which will be ‘tied’ to the time it was submitted and repeated at that time each day from 23 December 2005—3 January 2006. This will gradually produce a collaborative, time-based sound work. The project starts as a ‘blank sheet’ on the Friday the SHOWstudio team breaks for Christmas and gradually builds as viewers’ voices start to fill the void of the repeating, one-day timeframe. The piece will simultaneously play inside the empty studio and broadcast from the SHOWstudio website.

To take part, call +44 207 253 4351 and your voice or audio submission will be recorded. Log on the following day and you will hear the sound of your recording playing in the studio at the same time you called the previous day (and each day until 3 January). If someone else calls at that same time, the submissions will overlap, gently building into cacophony. If the number is engaged when you call, try again: you can make as many submissions as you like. Viewers are encouraged to experiment by recording different types of content. The beauty of this project is its unknown outcome, though it is certain that the more submissions made, the greater the capacity for abstraction and unexpected audio effects.
