Art Now Live Work
Sue Tompkins, Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan
Tate Britain, London
Saturday 9th December 2006
A gentle afternoon at Tate Britain in December encompassed a 'living sculpture' work by Joanne Tatham and Tom O'Sullivan, that featured a recognisible motif from their earlier work 'The Slaptick Mystics With Sticks' - characters that formed the centrepiece of plays, scripts, photographs and sculptures. Here they confront us with a motionless silent character mimicking the living sculpture folk so beloved of well-visited main squares accross Europe, posing in an absurdist diamond cube costume, in the voluminous sculture hall of Tate Britain.
A second 'Transmissions' chance to see the endearing performance of Sue Tompkins, this time performing 'Grease' 2006, specially commissioned for Tate Britain - one of her staccato song-word-speak ins. It is quite mesmerising just to watch her bouncily stepping about, letting her words -a series of often familiar phrases that she has collected, singled out and arrangement- come in and out of focus.
