My Barbarian
Medieval Morality
Peres Projects, Berlin
Saturday 22nd July, 2006

My Barbarian are a band, and a performative ensemble made up of the talents of an artist, an actor, a filmmaker, a video director, and a playwright. Their hybrid style of entertainment has been termed ‘showcore’, presumably as an evocation of entertainment and an extreme, or hardcore attitude to performance. Often created as site specific acts, the group sing, dance and act out fantastical stories whilst dressed in hand-made costumes. They combine medieval inspired folk satires with choreography indebted to Eighties dance television success 'Fame', resulting in surreal new-wave pop fables and 'condensed epic' performances.

For Peres Project in Berlin, they presented 'Medieval Morality’, an adaptation based on the 16th Century allegorical Everyman saga; which was intended as a humorous take on the art world. The story follows an artist who struggles to find his place in the creative world, and involves a devil and a mythological Norse warrior. First presented at the MAK Centre Schindler House in Los Angeles, in 2004, for this specially adapted version Berlin-based artist Jan Hammer participated in the performance. This documentation presents the five songs from the musical play.
