Jutta Koether
Metalist Moment
Performance as part of 'Love Letter' curated by Silke Otto Knapp
Herald Street, London
Thursday 27th July, 2006

Jutta Koether is a renowned performance artist, musician, writer and theoretician who has contributed to the discourse of contemporary painting. By some estimations she was considered the, "feminist response to the Cologne scene of the late 1980s”, (as noted by the Kolnischer Kunstverein, who recently accorded her a major solo exhibition), before moving to a different kind of experimental scene in New York scene. Here she developed an improvisational stance which embraced many practices, often working closely with musicians such as Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon.

As a central part of artist Silke Otto Knapp's curated exhibition, 'Love Letter', which included a key film of an Yvonne Rainer performance, Koether dominated the main space of the gallery with a monochromatic installation that included paintings, strobe lighting and silvery stage-backdrop hangings. This became the stage for a performance with long-term musical collaborator Tom Verlaine (of Television). The performance consisted of a slide show, instrumental form the band, lyrics sung by Koether, as well as some actions made with the smaller wall based works, which had bells or could spin on an axis.
