Artist Profile
Karen Elson
Karen Elson is a leading British model. Initially spotted in the street of
her hometown of Bolton, near Manchester, in the North of England, it was a
chance introduction to Steven Meisel in Milan that began her very singular
career. Under Meisel's influence, Elson established an incredibly
distinctive look, which included the removal of her eyebrows, a severe hair
cut and flaming red hair colour. Elson's idiosyncratic appearance has
galvanised her career, earning her the nickname 'beautiful freak', and
putting her at the forefront of the trend for unusual beauty. Before she
was twenty Elson, had been the face of international brands including
Chanel, Gucci, Valentino and Versace. She has been photographed by a wide
selection of leading image-makers such as Peter Lindberg, Mario Testino,
Craig McDean, Karl Lagerfeld, Nick Knight, Bruce Weber and Richard Avedon.
