Maison Martin Margiela A/W 2004-5
This film, showcasing Maison Martin Margiela's Autumn/Winter '04 womenswear collection, is based on conversations with five women. From these discussions the themes of the main line collection were drawn. In preparation for the piece, each woman was asked the same set of questions about their likes, dislikes and personal histories. The film's locations were designed to be in keeping with the women's answers, which feature as the soundtrack to the film itself. Four of the conversations mention specific physical elements, which informed the creation of the collection's Trompe L'Oeil prints, featuring crushed metal, hair, quilted upholstery and wickerwork. Other elements woven into the narrative of the collection -and the film- touch on concepts of Mannerism, where clothing clichés such as ostrich feathers, gilt lamé or men's blouson jackets are taken to their most extreme forms. Accessories seize upon the 'artisanal' methodology of re-working existing garment forms to construct alternative apparel; fedora hats and ballet shoes become waistcoats and bags respectively.
