TONYA
22nd September 2004
Peter Jensen's latest collection 'Tonya' is named after modern sporting
anti-heroine, Tonya Harding - the disgraced American ice skater whose
reputation was ruined by her involvement in the notorious attack on popular
'ice princess' rival Nancy Kerrigan in 1994. The event was so out of place
in the world of skating that it shook the sport of figure skating for some
time, and Tonya's notoriety was established in history. Jensen delights in
the contrasts of Tonya's persona and career changes - she became a boxer
after her probationary period away from competition. Jensen's collection is
given its own unconventional context germane to the inspiration - on figure
skaters on an ice rink - enabling the references to jar and blend with equal
measure. A unique opportunity to see how the clothes behave in an aspect of
motion seldom presented. The spectacle features skating costume references
such as tulle, frills, and flared skirts, but look out too for outfits that
feel deliberately out of place on the ice - tailored jackets, trousers and
coats. The colour palette is pale as ice -white, cream and pale yellow- with
brightly coloured prints. The prints evoke floral prints but use fruit and
vegetable motifs instead.
