What was the best thing about Carnival 2003?
The emotion and energy of the crowd was unbelievable. And the size of this year's crowd too. The papers are saying numbers were down but we had a record crowd at Good Times this year. The biggest ever according to official numbers.
What was the biggest difference from Carnival 2002?
Well we had a new Bud bus, and an improved sound system, plus a couple of tweaks to the site to make it more comfortable and safe. Also, we had a record number of first-timers at Good Times, which is a testament to us really crossing over and reaching a huge audience: our appeal is broadening.
What was your top 3 tunes of this year's Carnival?
My remix of Azzido da Bass 'Dooms Night', 'First, Last and Everything' by Barry White and the most emotional track was an old Frankie Knuckles tune I played.
You've been playing at Carnival for over 20 years. How has the crowd that come to Good Times changed over that time period?
Like I mentioned, our appeal is really broadening. We're crossing over and appealing to a broader audience than ever before. Our crowd over the weekend was amazing.
How many of the same faces keep coming back year after year?
Good Times has always had a real family affair feeling, but we welcome the first timers always!
Have you met and remained friends with people you've met at Notting hill?
Absolutely. I always look forward to seeing the familiar faces in the crowd, below the bus each year.
And what about the fashions? What were your crowd wearing when you first played. How have the changes since reflected changes in 'street' fashion?
Well, this year everyone's wearing Good Times t-shirts! It's hard to tell because I'm just seeing all the faces in the crowd really, having a good time year after year.
Do you have any lucky charms - or certain things - that you bring to every Carnival?
My hat!
How many years have you been wearing a hat at Carnival?
Off and on for 12 years now.
How have you seen Carnival's social/political role change over the years?
Its' hard for me to say because my Carnival is spent at Good Times and I never see the rest of it. I presume its role functions wickedly because it's a success every year and people come back again and again. It's a totally unique experience.
How did you react to the plans to move Carnival to a different location (Hyde Park was mooted at one stage)?
I have no problem at all with that. Carnival is just too big for the streets of Notting Hill. The people who came this year to Good Times may have made history, as it could be the last at the site.
And what about corporate sponsorship at Carnival:there seemed to be more than ever this year. Good or bad thing?
How would Carnival run without it? So long as it's free entry to everyone I don't care who pays for it, but the money has to come from somewhere to cover the costs. As long as the party is still good it's not a bad thing!
