LIVE 31 January 2004 Photographer Jason Evans and stylist Simon Foxton take an i-D menswear shoot as an opportunity to have fun with a creative gamble. Eschewing the comfort of careful pre-planning, conventional casting and extensive pictorial referencing, long-time collaborators Evans and Foxton aim instead for an experimental mood. 'Fancy Pants', hosted in the SHOWstudio LIVE space, has its parameters set loosely enough to allow maximum spontaneity. The clothing has been chosen to be invert current staid contemporary styles, looking to the unstructured, body conscious, colourful, and revealing. The models, bar one, are arriving sight unseen, 3 friends of a man Evans approached in the street. Lighting is to be governed by chance, and pictorial reference is kept to an absolute minimum with old sporting photos provided only to give the models ideas about pose and stance. Emanating from a shared sense of unease about contemporary editorial, Evans and Foxton hope to create a new way to make photographs.
