Viewer Questions

fino, dublin: hey, the polaroids are totally excellent, worth waiting for and boy did we wait!!!! well done to everyone on set. sadly i cant watch today :(
SHOWstudio: Karolina K is warming up in the make-up room. We're just about to go live for today, the third and final day of the Bring & Buy shoot...

Maru _ SDTR Tokyo, Tokyo: Many Japanese Kids are waitin for Nicola's shoot!
SHOWstudio: We'll let him know. We're expecting Nicola later this afternoong. It's currently 10:11 UK time.

Angela, stockport: Who is the model today and when does it start? Who is the first stylist today? thx
SHOWstudio: It's Karolina Kurkova. If you watch the stream from the hair and make-up/styling room, you'll see that she's already begun performing! We expect her on set, however, at about 11.

staff at commons&sense mag, TOKYO!!!!: We are sitting in front of the ibook just looking forward to nicola's shoot!!!!!!!
SHOWstudio: No pressure, then?!

Danelle, East London: Hello Showstudio! This project is great, have been watching on and off the past couple of days. Is it possible to see in the makeup and hair room, it would be really cool to see the models getting made up. I really like what Sam Knight does, is he there today?
SHOWstudio: Danelle, if you click below the video stream view, it will switch between the set and the make-up/styling rooms.

Andrews, Tokyo: The mistake of Brand name was discovered,in"PolaroidGallery-Shot#10" (Orlesponson→Orlespensen).
SHOWstudio: Andrews, I'll change it. That's the beauty of the web...

Roger Bustard, Wimbledon: How on Earth do you get any work done with that awful music playing so loudly?
SHOWstudio: Roger, it's a good question. Models' choice.

Karl, Helsinki: Sadly I only catch the shoot today , it is fantastic ! I love the poaroid of Simon Foxton. Is he there today ? I would like to ask him some questions about his work etc.
SHOWstudio: Karl, Simon isn't here today but generally, he's lurking online. Do you have a question for him?

Tiger, UK: who is styling this morning?
SHOWstudio: You are watching Karolina modelling Sarah Richardson's look as I write (12:12 UK time)

Namalee, London: Hi! Heavy Nirvana Naomi ensemble from JJ yesterday. How did Naomi enjoy being given the fullmetalculturejamminggrandslamming JJ treatment?!! Looking forward to nicola's shoot xx
SHOWstudio: Namalee, you've had a lot of feedback, both private and public. All good!! Yes, Naomi was gracious and enthusiastic and all that we would wish her to be.

Jean Claude, Canary Islands: Hi! I´d like to know if the garments not selected by the stylist will be photographed for Ebay ad; or if you´re going to use the pics submitted by viewers. Thank you!
SHOWstudio: We're going to do some special straight shots of the ones not used in the studio next week: keep watching Jean Claude, as ever!

Denitsa, moseley: I've got the same trouble seeing the dressing area as yesterday! It says 404: Not Found at the bottom of the window. I still see the set though. Could you please help? Thxx!
SHOWstudio: How's it looking now? Dorian's labouring to clarify matters.

Tiger, UK: I just read Eugene Souleiman is on set, has Sam McKnight's session finished?
SHOWstudio: No, not at all. Can't you hear him in the make-up area? I think Eugene was just popping by for a brief chat.

Alexandre Ermel, Brazil: what the budegt for this project?
SHOWstudio: I think we answered this one early, Alexandre: scroll down!

Alexandre Ermel, Brazil: the final shoots will be Original Polaroids or process film?
SHOWstudio: There will only be Polaroids in our gallery, but you will be able to see the results of the film, printed in the October issue of i-D, on sale from the second week of September, we believe.

Robbert, Amsterdan: Love to see Nick at work ! But what is he doing with those colourfilters?
SHOWstudio: Between shots, he's working on a separate project, also for the October shoot, which is based around his second assistant, Ruth.

Robbert, Amsterdam: Hi again :-) what do we see in the background on the wall ?
SHOWstudio: Robbert, it depends which stream you're on. On the photographic set, the back wall is amass with Polaroids. In the styling room, it looks like faux Deco wallpaper to me!

Robbert, Amsterdam: :-) i was looking at the shoot .. so that must be the wall-of-polaroids ... but i like the faux Deco too !! ;-) .. and i must say that this streaming and live questions stuff is real nice!!! bye bye
SHOWstudio: Yes, after years of refreshing stills, it's great to finally have m o t i o n! We prefer the stills in SHOWstudio, though, without the sound!

troy, UK: This looks cool, Karolina is amazing... great outfit and music!!!!!!!!! Is she enjoying this shoot?
SHOWstudio: Karolina has now departed. Next up, it's Ivan Putrov and Daria Pavlenko from the Royal and Kirov ballets (styled by Katy England and Alister Mackie), Gareth Pugh and Kylie Minogue's dancers (styled by Nicola Formichetti) and Ann-Sofie Back's pattern cutter from Kazakhstan (styled by Ann-Sofie).

Gui, SP/BR: Will you invite other photographers to participate on this project? (On line/live shoot I mean)
SHOWstudio: Nick's been asked to curate the whole of the October issue of i-D and all the stories in it are his, I think. However, we regularly work on live imaging projects with a range of different photographers on SHOWstudio. Who did you have in mind, Gui?

James Tregaskes, New York: Hope the shoot goes well, the quality to these images deserves an exhibition you know! They are superb. Any plans?
SHOWstudio: We'll certainly put it to Nick, but between you and us, Nick is always too focused on the next project to feel reflective or retrospective about what he's done, even when it's fairly recent! That's why he puts such store by SHOWstudio: it's his living exhibition of sorts. Besides, all this will be published in the October issue of i-D.

a human Retailer, www.humanRetail.com: NOKI shot 15
SHOWstudio: That wouldn't be because your donated garment is in it, would it, Human Retailer? ;-) Congratulations! You made the shoot!

zeroh, uk: what will the title be of i-D's october issue be? Will it be in keeping with this shoot?
SHOWstudio: It's got a working title of 'The Nationality Issue'.

Claire, Los Angeles: Watching the live stream of the shoot, the dancers look gorgeous in McQueen. Who is the stylist dressing the guy with the red shirt and black tie, debating about the beige jacket?
SHOWstudio: The stylist is Nicola Formichetti (he has a lot of fans!) and the model is Gareth Pugh. What you can't see at the moment is that they have also brought all Kylie Minogue's dancers with them! It's going to be a performance-packed evening...

zebby, london: hi there, i just checked my garment on the polaroid gallery. it's amazing indeed.
SHOWstudio: Which one are you in, Zebby?

SHUN, TOKYO: hey nicola! i'm watching you from tokyo!! i'm dying to see the kylie's dancer with your styling soon !!! here is 3:30am!! hayaku--!!!!!
SHOWstudio: thanks..almost there....10/15 mins..?.....all the dancers are really amazing!!you should see how they move.. but also gareth pugh looks fantastic!!!!!!!!!

Nancy, London: Hi, do you happen to have a full length shot of the Sarah Richardson outfit and also a front view of the Cathy Edwards look. thanks nancyx
SHOWstudio: Lordy! Give 'em an inch! We can certainly ask, but I think the Polaroids gallery represent's Nick's edits, together with the i-D team.

SHUN, TOKYO: ohhhhhh sounds FABULOUS!!!! is shooting start right now?? sooooo exciting!!!!! i have to call to all nicola's tokyo friends!! but 4am...
SHOWstudio: Nicola's just about to go on set, actually. But you can see him and Gareth in the styling room if you switch the camera just now!

sasaki C&S, TOKYO: hi nicola!! how many models do you have?
SHOWstudio: Seven including Gareth, who's actually a fashion designer. Good legs, though.

becky, toronto: Hello to Showstudio!! This keeps getting more and more exciting to watch. My question is: I sent in a jacket I made with gold guns on the back. I was wondering if anyone had considered using it, and with which outfit?
SHOWstudio: Becky, all the credits of what has been considered and used are in the Polaroids Gallery. All items that haven't actually been used on the shoot we are going to photograph at SHOWstudio next week. We also have plans for a public display in London, between the shoot and the auction on EBay to happen during August.

Gui, SP/BR: Sorry, I was out for a while. You've asked me who I had in mind (about inviting other photographers).... I thought about Craig McDean
SHOWstudio: Craig's in New York, I'm afraid!

Tom, London: I didn't know you were doing designer's portraits as well....! Good advertising, no?
SHOWstudio: The best! Gareth's a bit of a performer too, though, no?

SHUN, TOKYO: Music makes the people come together ^^ that's really fun and fantastic shoot!! i'm dying to go to studio!!!!! is gareth in front of dancers? he looks sooooo cute also dancers too. i'm looking forward to see the picture!!
SHOWstudio: Yes, that's Gareth with the dancers. Keep checking the Polaroid Gallery, Shun!

Declan Chan, Hong Kong: Ask the Kylie's dancers to dance please!
SHOWstudio: You try asking them to stop.

fino, dublin: hey, any favourites yet? Shot#22 Stylist: Judy Blame & Nelson Model: Karolina K is my fav so far....
SHOWstudio: We'll pass it on to all concerned.

Konlado desa, Tokyo: Shun sounds familiar. You guys are having waaaay too much fun. Weird question thought. What food do they have on set? Good? Not so good? Maybe a little Dominos?
SHOWstudio: Terry from i-D gives good Brie: it's official. We had a cheese bonanza at lunchtime. Otherwise, we've been troughing more Cadbury's than Birmingham. There was a cheeky Thai earlier this evening and a lobster was spied yesterday lunchtime, but other than that, it's been rounds and rounds of toast.

fino, dublin: are u transmitting live again today? [thursday]
SHOWstudio: Fino, we're almost ready to go (it's 10:40 UK time, after all!). We listened to your suggestions yesterday and have re-positioned the camera on set.

miho, soho: I am really surprised by the number of SHOW viewers moaning about the invovlement of PR offices in the project. Not all PRs are about flogging sweat shop manufactured, uninspiring clothes. some of us actually feel like we are doing the fashion industry a justice by giving a voice to talented designers that could otherwise perhaps go unnoticed by the very public that seems to want to deride us. but thank you SHOW for your answers. yes it is a business and everyone has to make a living!
SHOWstudio: Miho, thanks for adding your perpective. It's a difficult one. As consumers, we want to ignore the business of fashion and as cultural critics (isn't everyone one these days?) we want to regard fashion as a cultural form, free from the realities of commerce or work. This is further compounded by the fact that many designers and fashion creatives want to be thought of as 'artists' rather than as purveyors of craft and their rhetoric is full of aesthetics, rather than commercial considerations. However, these paradoxes and points of contest are what makes it interesting, aren't they? Why else would we bother, otherwise? God knows there must be something special motivating all you poorly paid, overworked and undervalued PRs!

fino, dublin: the video feed disintegrates into a sort of kaleidoscope after 10 seconds or so. my computer is high spec and my line is broadband
SHOWstudio: Fino, Dorian has mentioned this in the front page of the blog:

We've also had a number of people saying they are having problems getting the stream. The top fix for this is to go into your QuickTime preferences and change your 'transport preferences' to HTTP rather than UDP. This will get round a number of firewalls which might be stopping you from viewing it properly.

zeroh, uk: hello to MR.NOKI! We're watching you.... which mask are you wearing today?
SHOWstudio: Hi there Studio noki here.

S.O.B =SUFFICATION OF BRANDING

Geoff Ang, Singapore: nick, how many sheets of 8x10s u shot per model? on average... :-)
SHOWstudio: It can span from two to fifty, but for this shoot, he's averaging 20 per shot.

B Kelly, Room 26 and K Mart , London: Happy birthday Penny!
SHOWstudio: Thank you! And what a way to spend it!! K Mart, your flightsuit is being modelled by Tafari, styled by Simon Foxton, as we speak!

Drew, Canada: What camera and is Nick shooting with?
SHOWstudio: It's a huge 10x8 camera, Drew. I've heard him describe it as a 'great washing machine on stilts'.

Sebastian LeCrumb, Nimes: Are the clothes being individually customised by each stylilst?
SHOWstudio: In most cases, yes. Some designers sent in a note asking that their garments wouldn't be customised (they had that option) but mostly, it's up to the stylists.

eric, sweden: i havent seen single time that nick or his asistants would use light meter with flashes..
SHOWstudio: Hi Eric, there are two main reason for this. Firstly, it's a time thing: there isn't time to take a light reading every time the model moves further away from the light or a light is moved or flicked on or off. Secondly, a light meter will give you an average exposure. A lot of the time, we work up to two stops either side of the value a light meter would give you.

-Jez

fino, dublin: any chance of a peek at the polaroids?
SHOWstudio: Have you checked the Polaroids gallery?

bail 100, brighton: does mr noki have a retail outlet .where can one purchase his garments ...
SHOWstudio: hi ya Mr bail. now sit and behave you know you can get retail from noki any time
- Noki

lucy, UK: Hi, how much time do the stylists have to choose each look, then prepare it? (like the new design of this live project by the way)
SHOWstudio: Lucy: I'll pass it on. Dorian and the Pauls have been labouring to provide you with two views. Each stylist has an alloted period of about one and a half hours, including styling. It's quite fluid, though!

lucy, UK: & how many shots does Nick have to make for i-D over the 3 days?
SHOWstudio: There are nineteen different stylists and several of them are doing extra shots. However, we won't know the actual number of pages until the layouts are done.
-Erika

zebby, London: how come did u choose this music? and does it really help? is ther any possibililties to disturb the shooting?
SHOWstudio: Since we first started doing these live shoots with sound, music has been the one thing that everyone comments upon. The thing is that on set, it's just used as a tool, rather than entertainment. The minute that someone steps up on the photographic stage, the team just needs some upbeat cheese to elicit a 'performance' out of the model. That's why you'll hear some god awful thumping track over and over again. The selection has nothing to do with taste, therefore. It's pure functionalism. Feel free to send in a mix CD though, Zebby. Goodness knows we could do with a better selection!

Daniel Brown, London: Oo that's much better! Its all looking splendid today! Erm, thats not a question though so i'll ask; can you get Nick to check out those files when he's got a mo- specifically if he's happy with the aspect ratio?!
SHOWstudio: It's on his list, Danny. Thanks for the prompt for the link to the Polaroid section yesterday!

fino, dublin: ohoh dorians tip worked, its better now, cheers x
SHOWstudio: Great. He's good, that Dorian.

ninebob, on vocation: is it true that there is gona be a noki dildo, made out crystal?
SHOWstudio: Yes, oh yes, second hand crystal vases will be soursed melted bown to fit the intamate lady area, fatter thicker versions for the boys. nine bob i so hear you sigh .

ANY ONE OUT THERE WITH A PENATRATING THICKNESS PLEASE APPLY FOR PRIVATE MOULDING!!!!!!!!!

NOKI-IT'S A CULTURE JAM GRAND SLAM

Vanessa, Over the Rainbow: Is Tilda there today ? I'm too sleep deproved to understand the information.
SHOWstudio: Vanessa, you've obviously been too tired to read the blog on the front of SHOWstudio too! Tilda cancelled at the start of this week. She sent her Viktor & Rolf dress, though.

fino, dublin: what the budget for the 2 days shoot? ballpark?
SHOWstudio: We're shooting editorial, Fino. There are only budgets to speak of when you're shooting advertising.

Sandrine, Lampeter: Where are these Polaroids from today? I keep hearing about what's in them, but you seem to have halted at Naomi's penultimate shot last night. Has your scanner packed up?
SHOWstudio: Ah, Sandrine. We were wondering whether you'd logged on this time. We thought we could do with someone, er, voluable from the last live shoot we did, with Liberty. You are right: we are not quite up to date in the Polaroid Gallery. Nick has been so snowed under with edits for a story he did with Simon Foxton, one he did with Jonathan Kaye and also a reportage project he's been doing with his assistant, Ruth, that it's been impossible to extricate him from shooting or editing to make the selection. Don't worry, though, first opportunity that we have, we'll be on it!

fino, dublin: is bishi taking requests? can we pick a tune for the ukelele?
SHOWstudio: Fantastic, wasn't she? Is that a call for an encore?

Anthony Petrocelli, a sleepy city in the American Southwest: I'm a Harvard-educated attorney of Italian descent who left the big-city rat race and headed west. It's refreshing to know that I can turn on my computer and there'll always be something wonderful to look at on SHOWstudio. Don't you get tired of being so good all the time!
SHOWstudio: We can't possibly answer a question like that! We definitely get tired sometimes...

fino, dublin: Is that a call for an encore? Yes....rock on Bishi!
SHOWstudio: We'll pass it on!!

Peter, Upstairs: Where can I buy a belly-chain like the one Naomi is wearing?
SHOWstudio: It's Christian Lacroix and a generous donation from a viewer, Peter!

Max, London: Just tuned in. Can you let me know who's up styling wise this evening. Cheers. Love the work Showstudio.
SHOWstudio: Erika's just about to style Naomi Campbell!

xenicon, washington: if there are requests- could camera operator get in the way a it? put us closer or even in?
SHOWstudio: Not sure what you mean, Xenicon. Welcome back: haven't heard from you since, oh, the last live shoot!

Kyle, LA: Where are the polaroids from today ?
SHOWstudio: Just coming, Kyle.

Landon, Vancouver: I'm wondering how there's 'no budgets' for editorial? Do you just wing it and try and be as efficient as possible?
SHOWstudio: It works a bit like a shop window. You get greater creative freedom (hopefully!) in editorial but unless you can work miracles on the cheap, it's at your own expense. The hope is that art directors then see what you can do and want to pay you enough to do advertising that it then under-writes the rest of your editorial. It's a bit of a leap of faith, but it's the ultimate process of commercial 'natural selection'.

Landon, Vancouver: Where's Kate Moss? Doesn't she care about hungry children?!
SHOWstudio: In the papers, Landon, in the papers.

benny, i-D Magazine, London: Hey Erika, when are you coming back to the office? We need you to finish the catwalk report and I wanna go get crunked...
SHOWstudio: Benny, Erika's busy styling Miss Campbell! Aren't you watching?!

xenicon, : I opened Brand.new a book pubbed a few years back and here's quote from KN;" What I was getting frustrated about was that I work w/ my heart, using real feelings that take into account the world around me. There was a division between the work that I was producing and of supposedly beautiful women in supposedly beautiful clothes in doing supposedly beautiful things and real comtemporary issues" I see SHOWstudio is a real way of bridging that division while still, amazingly, maintaining the reality of it. Just thought I mention...
SHOWstudio: What about you, Xenicon? How do YOU bridge the gap between the beautiful and the real?

Landon, Vancouver: ps. Penny, if that is you, those pics of the Liberty print are still coming, probably this weekend when I drag a friend w/ a digital camera over. And happy birthday ;)
SHOWstudio: Landon, great to hear from you! We can't wait to see it in situ! Thanks for the felicitations. I'm being spoilt in herel lobster lunches, srawberry sundaes, flowers and the work's pretty great too!

nicola formichetti, london: that was great!! noki and naomi! i cant wait for my turn! see you tomorrow xxxx
SHOWstudio: We can't wait to see you either, Nicola! Can you divulge any plans?!

paul roberts, London: is that Nick's own studio, or is it a hire studio?
SHOWstudio: No, Nick doesn't have a studio, other than SHOWstudio. He generally hires when shooting.

fino, dublin: goodnite showstudio and thanks for the entertainment/inspiration
SHOWstudio: Thanks Fino: you've been with us all day, haven't you? Now you can get back to the life we've been distracting you from!

nicola formichetti, london: mmm....balloons, that's all i'm saying...xxx
SHOWstudio: Excellent. We'll steel ourselves and see you in the afternoon...

Peter, London: Is that the make-up room in the background?
SHOWstudio: Peter, the make-up room is upstairs in this studio, so you can probably see Sam McKnight, Val Garland and Marian Newman at various times, together with models Erin O'Connor and later on Naomi Campbell.

David, New York: Whose voices can we hear ?
SHOWstudio: It's a combination, David!! You can hear the make-up and hair team (pictured upstairs) and then the stylists below. Maybe if you give me more information about what precisely you can hear being said, then we'll endeavour to identify them more specifically.

Radouane & Kim, Amsterdam: no question,..just a compliment! WHAT A GREAT PROJECT! it generates interactivity! WE LOVE IT!!!
SHOWstudio: Thanks very much: we've only just got going, though. Did you send anything in, Radouane & Kim?

Wing Shya, Hong Kong: How will the overall look be considered by Katie G, does she have any creative demand in what the final images should look in the image process?
SHOWstudio: as well as working with brief i've been given by i-d - that this is a 'catwalk show' using vintage pieces and will look a bit like a fashion show when it reaches the magazine, i also considered what will look graphic on the finished page and be eye-catching as an image, which is why i think i'm going to use a bit of spray painting this morning! I had my poor assisatnt scouring camden high street for flouresecent paint at 930 this morning!

-Katie Grand

Wing Shya, Hong Kong: Hi Val, Do you consult with Katie Grand on what style of make up you have in mind? Or does Katie suggests to you?
SHOWstudio: Val says it's a discussion; a running collaboration. However, ultimately, it's Katie's moment, so she has the last say.

zeroh, uk: will you be posting a running schedule for the next couple of days or is it a case of drop in and see what's going on ?
SHOWstudio: Hi Zeroh: don't we recognise you from previous live shoots? ;-) The running order today is -loosely- as follows: Katie Grand, Jacob K, Nancy Rohde, Jonathan Kaye and Jamie Surman when it comes to stylists. Our key models for the day are Erin O'Connor, followed by Naomi Campbell. We are also expecting some special guests: actors, personalities and performers. They will be arriving throughout the day according to their own schedule!

Pam, Nuneaton: When does this get interesting ?
SHOWstudio: Pam, this is an accurate reflection of how shoots are. Some bits involve a lot of waiting around and then suddenly, it's a manic rush to get it all captured. It's not all glitter and champagne, you know.

QueenofTarts, New Yawk, NY: It is more tricky to style when the selections are as random as they seem? Is it more about choosing for the personality who is going to be wearing it or is K. Grand (you're the best Katie!!!) trying to weave some kind of narrative into her choices?
SHOWstudio: Katie:

i'd had a few ideas about how to address this shoot - but always thought in the back of my mind that everything would change when i arrived at the studio this morning. I did wonder about making erin super sexy - with big fake breasts and a suntan - kind of erin meets pam anderson, but now that i'm here today i think i'm going to make a kaftan out of a nicole farhi sheet and spray apint her. Of course it may all change over the course of the next hour!

Wing Shya, Hong Kong: RE: white back drop... the reason behind that question is that the colour contrast used in make up is very interesting and the clothes being used! Just want to know why the use a blank canvas like white instead of like say Peat Brown?
SHOWstudio: The *black* background has been chosen because the photography being captured is designed to emulate catwalk imagery. The final shoot in i-D is meant to look like a 'second-hand catwalk shoot'.

Luke, London: When NK was a skin head, did he share the same views as the skin heads?
SHOWstudio: They don't all have the same views.

-Nick Knight

Jacqui, England: This is really exciting, Katie Grand has brought a Nicole Farhi sheet with her, is using this an impulse decision from a selection of back-up pieces, or was it pre-planned? Thanks.
SHOWstudio: Katie brought the sheet with her, Jacqui, so she must have had a few things in mind previously, as she mentions in her answers below.

Natascha Combé, Berlin / Germany: Tears are running down my face. I just got back from a long hospital stay and folow the project since last night. Would you allow me to send a garment of my collection called "AMISH" from 1990 sent to you by express, so I can join the project still?
SHOWstudio: Natascha, if you can get it to us tomorrow morning, someone will fetch it up from SHOWstudio and bring it to the studio we're working in.

Dimitri, Athens: Who will finally wear the swan dress?
SHOWstudio: That's entirely up to the stylists.

Fay, Kirkaldy: What sort of spray paint is Katie using ?
SHOWstudio: Fay, it's 'Just Spray'. There is a Fifer on the SHOWstudio team who'd like to point out that Kirkcaldy has a 'c'... Where are you really from?

RAPHAELA, LONDON: WHAT TIME IS JAMIE SHOOT?
SHOWstudio: Raphaela, Jamie's up last today. I reckon it will be pretty late. Hard to tell at this stage, but we have six shots and we're only just on our first (it's 12:27 UK time at time of writing this).

JEREMY SCOTT, HOLLYWOOD !: HEY NICK WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO DO MY PORTRAIT ??? IM READY FOR MY CLOSE UP MR KNIGHT !
SHOWstudio: You're up early, aren't you?! If you're THE Jeremy Scott, you'd better get in touch and let us know when you're next in London!

kamille, australia: how are stylists choosing garments???on aesthetics or by who submitted the garment or by creating an ensemble that will tell an interesting story???
SHOWstudio: I think it's pure, aesthetics, Kamille. You could ask them, but it's unlikely that any of them would divulge their private motivations, industry allegiances or peer politics!

JEREMY SCOTT, HOLLYWOOD !: YEAH ITS ME THE ONE AND ONLY AND YEAH YOUR RIGHT I AM UP LATE - OR EARLY AS ITS 5 AM HERE AND I VE STILL NOT HIT THE SAC YET - WORKING ON THE NEW COLLECTION BUSY BUSY -I LL BE IN LONDON SOMETIME IN OCT AS IM GOING TO BE FILMMING IN SCOTLAND WITH HARMONY FOR ABOUT A MONTH SO ILL GIVE YOU ALL A SHOUT THEN - XXX JS
SHOWstudio: Perfect timing. Let's meet up at SHOWstudio and hatch a plan for a project. Looking forward to seeing the new collection and the film! Can you divulge any further details?!

We're actually planning a project for October/November where we're asking the key photographers and designers that shape international fashion to submit a 30 second film short with the brief 'fashion in motion'. Nick wonders if you might like to do it? We're intrigued to know what you'd come up with!

Karleigh, Michigan,USA: Are there going to be accessories(shoes,earrings...) used in the styling? If so, what is the source from which they are from? This project has really been such a fun process to watch and I'm looking forward to every minute that has yet to happen. Thank you for letting me be a part of it.
SHOWstudio: Karleigh, thanks. Again, if you look through the Viewers Submissions parcels, you'll see exactly the proportion of jewellery to handbags and shirts to dresses. Almost everything has been sent in as part of the Bring & Buy appeal.

QueenofTarts, NY, NY: Are they going to be any men modeling for this shoot? I love Nancy's work in styling for menswear...
SHOWstudio: Yes, there will be men later. Nancy, however, will be styling Erin. I'll pass on the compliment, though!

Yau Kiu Lee, Luk Keng, HK China: Love to know what Levis's jeans NK is wearing? And does he have any more designs in the pipe line with Levis? Maybe he could auction some off on Ebay "size 32" waist! Gyeah!"
SHOWstudio: If you have a look through the Viewer's Submissions gallery (accessible from the Bring & Buy project front page), I think Nick mentions in the form accompanying his shirt exactly which number of Levis jeans he wears.

kenneth mackenzie, london: the live link doesn't work
SHOWstudio: What exact problem are you having Kenneth? Email us directly at genmail@showstudio.com and we'll try and sort it out. You've got Quicktime, right?

Yau Kiu Lee, Luk Keng, Sha Tau Kok, China: Being repressed in a China's communist state, I would like to thank i-D for giving me a brighter future in seeing the other side of the world with fashion, images and direction in many years of reading!
SHOWstudio: Good Lord! Are you charging i-D with the responsibility of heralding in Global Capitalism to the Communist masses? What a responsibility! What will happen to i-D, come the Revolution, then?! ;-)

Sylv, Dorset: What's Jacob got her wearing?
SHOWstudio: Fogal black, lycra, sleeveless turtle-necked top, Campagnard tights (worn on head), Emilio Cavallini Tights (worn on arms and legs), Wolford houndstooth skirt, padded out by Rokit ballerina skirts, black and white stretch-silk corset, yellow pom-pom neckpiece by Jo Gordon and Jil Sander black lace-up ankle boots.

Lydia, London: Is the submision from Emily Knight Nicks daughter? Penny- you mentioned the 'tear in your eye' from Bernhard's crochet slippers- I had my moment with the little pink jacket...! I have been following this project daily- it is so so so fabulous. I cant wait to see the final shoot xxx
SHOWstudio: Well spotted, Lydia. I'm frequently moved to tears by fashion, but it's not always for good reasons! I'm glad you're having fun. Which pieces will you be bidding for?

Becky, Toronto: I have had so much fun watching this project develop! Props to everyone who has sent things in, and to everyone who has made this happen. My question is this: Will every garment be photographed, or will only a few be selected?
SHOWstudio: Becky, it's really hard to know. We're not being very draconian with the stylists, in the sense that they have a totally open brief. In some cases, as you will have seen, they've brought their own stuff. I think what we will do with any items *not* photographed over the next couple of days is shoot straight images of them when we get back to SHOWstudio towers. These, together with Nick's images, will be used for the EBay sale.

Knight of the shiny cod piece, Perth!: Is Valadore there? Sorry if this is embaracing but you asked for it!
SHOWstudio: This is just too much , I cant believe you got on?
-Val

Lydia, London: ... I'm a bit partial to Mr. Galliano's hat, Anne D's tank and Peter Jensen's doll... but the v. high profile pieces are just as special as the civvies. However, I think the brief was very clear that the pieces were supposed to be 'your favourite'... shame on you fashion pr's for sending in press collection pieces at the late stages! (all lovely though!)
SHOWstudio: Heh heh. They don't call fashion a business for nothing!

stefan, london: can we see the polaroids of namalee?
SHOWstudio: The Polaroids will be shown once they are shot, edited, scanned and captioned. Namalee's not yet on set!

Kenneth Bruno, London: Is that the only camera angle or can you see Nick shooting like the Liberty project?
SHOWstudio: It's frustrating, isn't it, Kenneth? If we show the view on set, then we miss back-stage. And vice versa. Plus, you can guarantee that as soon as you tell people that they are being broadcast with sound, then they tend to scatter out of ear and eyeshot!! The thing about the live stream is that we can only provide a single view, whereas with the refreshing stills, there is more scope. However, it's certainly an improvement to now be able to offer live sound and motion, in addition to pure stills. What we'd like, of course, is a multi stream, but one thing at a time...

Pam, Nuneaton: Is that Jonathan Kaye in the black sweater ?
SHOWstudio: Pam, Jonathan Kaye's always in a black sweater. Do you have a question for him or do you just like to watch?

Leonard, Dublin: Can we see more of Mary-Anna please?
SHOWstudio: Leonard, Mary-Anna is far too industrious and diligent to be standing around on camera. If you watch *very carefully*, you'll see her whizz by with some details of credits and the like.

Coddy, Perth: Val................................Where did you get that dress?
SHOWstudio: Rick Owens

Pam, Nuneaton: I'd like to ask Jonathan Kaye if he needs an assistant. I would be prepared to commute.
SHOWstudio: Jonathan would be delighted to consider you for work experience, Pam. He feels it's really important to pass on the benefit of industry knowledge; especially since he had such a patchy training himself (he's mainly self-taught). Whereabouts in Nuneaton are you, Pam? You don't happen to know the Fleur de Lys pub, do you?

Annie, HK: Will photos of the original garment owners be pubished in i-D?
SHOWstudio: Annie, I think that's up to i-D. They'll certainly be mentioned in the descriptions for the EBay sale, though. We're also planning to send all your forms with the garment, so that the new owners are aware of the previous ones. We're rigorous, that way at SHOWstudio!

Yau Kiu Lee, Luk Keng Sha Tau Kok, China: Is the live transcript printed in i-D?
SHOWstudio: I shouldn't have thought so, Yau Kiu Lee.

Chris, London: That Namalee is stunning, is she a model?
SHOWstudio: She is today, Chris.

Matthew Production Director i-D, i-D Studio: For Yau Kiu Lee. If you want to be in i-D, better make it funky!
SHOWstudio: There's your criteria, YYL.

Brian G, New York: Can we have more Namalee-style action in the backstage area - please??!!
SHOWstudio: Brian, I think Namalee is just finishing her shot on set. Naomi's being groomed, meanwhile, in the hair and make-up area. Can't you hear everyone telling how beautiful she is? ;-)

QueenofTarts, NY, NY: How do all the stylists feel buzzing around each other, working on the same project when they're usually fighting for the same gigs? Do they feel relaxed enough not to be competitive w/ one another?
SHOWstudio: Well, one of Nick's intentions with this project was to build on an idea originally put to us by the writer Harriet Quick, years ago. She suggested to us that we stage a thrift 'stylathon', pitting the wits of various different stylists in a kind of 'beat the clock' event. We never quite got round to this and Harriet wasn't sure she had the time to host it herself. However, when we were structuring this project, we knew that we'd receive a real variety of clothes and that stylists wouldn't be able to approach the assemblage of each look in a conventional way: the pieces wouldn't be sympathetic to one another because they hadn't been called in with this in mind. So, we thought it would be interesting to shift the focus onto the stylist in the way Harriet had originally suggested and emphasise what it is that they do that distinguishes them from each other.

Furthermore, because we are a website, we've never suffered from the tacit industry rules that if you work for one institution, you can't for another. These conditions can be a real burden for emerging photographers and stylists, so we wanted to take this opportunity to mix what are regarded as the 'separate camps' together. Of course, this was never going to suit everyone. However, we've been really taken by the generosity of the stylists participating. It must be daunting to be 'marked on a curve' in this way, but the spirit of gentle competitiveness must be a key motivation, as well as the fact that it's for charity.

Mike, Vancouver, Canada: I just wanted to say what a treat it is to hear all that variety of British accents you have going on there. I studied linguistics at Cambridge some years ago. I can pick out a rich West country burr ( Val I think ) and also a man's voice from Southern Scotland ( Ayrshire ? ) and a woman's voice with an unmistakable Eastern Scottish touch.
SHOWstudio: Mike, the Ayrshire accent is a mystery. It's back to Phonetics class for you!

STREETERS CREW, OLD STREET: WE WANT TO SEE OUR ARTIST'S BUT CANNOT GET TO SEE THE LIVE SHOW!!!!!
SHOWstudio: Well, hello Streeters. What *can* you see? Do you have Quicktime installed on your computers? I seem to remember you having problems with your server?

Jacqui, England: Why can't stylists work for a variety of magazines, is it the style of their work, politics, loyalty?
SHOWstudio: Jacqui, this rule is an ancient one and its precise origin is unclear. It's treated as tacit knowledge; an indubitable truth, which is what allows it to perpetuate. Artwork is a commodity like any other and magazines, as businesses, need to protect their USPs. Every so often one organisation gets anxious about another and a dictate goes round to all their practitioners, warning them not to defect. It's all nuance and rumour, though. As freelancers, most contributors aren't bound by contract!

Jean Claude, Canary Island: Hi everyone! I´d like to know if we will be able to see how the photoshoot is going on, like in Liberty´s Ross last project. Now I only can see a room storing all the garments.
SHOWstudio: Hello Jean Claude. Taking a break from your stellar work on the FORUM? Today it's backstage. You'll have to check out the Polaroids Gallery to see what's happening on set. And, of course, the October issue of i-D!

Matt, i-D: Big hello to all the i-D subscribers being redirected from i-dmagazine.com. Material from this shoot will be published in the October issue of i-D. On sale September. 8th.
SHOWstudio: Ha! We hear you're pretty good at fixing computers as well as publicity, Matt! :-)

Basil Chamberlin, Sydney Australia: Do you mean Matt Hawker at i-D? Art Director extaordinaire, the guy that lauched Black+White magazine here in Sydney and went on to be art director of the Hayward Gallery?
SHOWstudio: One and the same, Baz. Any relation to Richard?

Declan Chan, Hong Kong: Just want to say Cheers to the team of showstudio. The project here is getting more and more interactive and interesting,
SHOWstudio: Ah, bless you, Declan. The i-D team are labouring equally to make it happen!

Declan Chan, Hong Kong: Do you guys enjoy doing a project with extensive preparation time or doing it spontaneouly more? Will you guys got pannicked if it's too spontaneous?
SHOWstudio: It might look like we had tons of preparation time on this project, but in honesty, we could certainly have done with another month on it. This time of year is always like this: the whole fashion industry takes August off, and so takes on double the work during July to compenate. Consequently, it's been super stressful getting this one off the ground. But as in all cases, the panic and the chaos becomes part of the product.

Declan Chan, Hong Kong: At the very beginning, like weeks ago, when I read the project brief here on the net, I expect the clothing donated by people will have a significant story by itself, which will therefore make the project conceptually amazing. However, after I read the unwrapping session, it seems there are more outfits sent by fashion press office instead. Does this kind of commercial intervention disappoint you guys????? Or has it been expected already?
SHOWstudio: Personally, I find myself operating at two levels. As the Editor of SHOWstudio, the viewer's experience is paramount, so anything that compromises the integrity of the concept and lessens the pleasure in their participation would be undesirable, were that the case. However, at another level, SHOWstudio aims to document the reality of the industry and not just the fashion-fabulous veneer: the process rather than the product. From that perspective, standard PR activity is fine because it's an accurate reflection of how the industry actually works. Ultimately, I'd rather we received collector's items from Tom Ford's final collection for Yves Saint Laurent from the YSL press office (instead of Tom himself) than not at all.
-Penny

Norman, Brazil: Is that Fran Modelling? Hot!
SHOWstudio: We couldn't persuade her, Norman, much to Jonathan Kaye's chagrin!

Lard, London: Where are the updated polaroids??!!
SHOWstudio: All in good time, Lard. They are constantly being updated, but the stylist and photographer have to oversee the selection and they're rather busy on set! Keep checking, they're a-coming.

zeroh, uk: it's been a long day for you guys! what time do you expect the live feed to finish?
SHOWstudio: We're on the last shot of the day, so perhaps an hour? It's 9 o'clock UK time now.

zeroh, uk: Oh ya! and when's NOKI in, by the way
SHOWstudio: NOKI will be with us tomorrow. He's up at around lunchtime, but we expect him to be in, customising, all day.
