With the frenetic, frantic catwalk schedule wearing out even the best of us, it's a pleasure to break with the somewhat staid tradition of the catwalk show for a foray into film. Last season and this, London's 'Prints Charming' David David has opted out of runway presentation in favour of showcasing his work via moving image. Last year, it was colour-blocked contrasts on purest white, showcased in an upbeat, Wham!-alike pop video that transformed the models themselves into moving embodiments of the simultaneous graphics. This season - as with so many other collections - David David is a somewhat darker affair. The collections title, 'Something Sleeps Inside Us,' is the title - and while the dark, elegiac work of photographer and filmmaker Toyin may seem be a natural match for Saunder's peppy, preppy and poppy multicoloured prints, for Autumn/Winter 2009 her dark work suited the collections strong, slightly fierce geometrics and darker, richer colours. Contrasts of primary reds, purple and yellow in shard-like prints sit over brilliant, billowing yellow and cyan silk, printing in patterns redolent of Constructivist, Futurist and Vorticist graphic design. Toyin took these shapes, laid them again the dark backdrop of a disused church and set them off in motion to a rock soundtrack on a trio of ballet dancers. The result? Dark, delicate and utterly mesmerising.

Q&A WITH DAVID DAVID

Can you briefly describe your Autumn/Winter 2009 collection? Winter heat wave; vivid; youthful but sophisticated.
 
What were your influences and inspirations? Influence for the prints came from a puzzle I found in a 1970s newspaper, which was lying at the bottom of my sock draw at my parents home. I guess it was your olden day suduku, a brick based brainteaser; it's exciting to trip-up on an image that triggers your brain into motion. The silhouettes stay true to David David: simple and easy to wear to compliment the energy of the print.

Why have you chosen to produce a film this season? As an artist I relate more easily to film than the catwalk. I enjoy the buzz of the catwalk and would love to do it again, but I'd be sure to make a film to compliment the show. A film is so accessible and easy to view and the audience views the work as equals; there's no hierarchy and no front row to fight over.  A film has longevity and can be around long after the last girl would have stepped off the runway. Plus the budget for a film is much more manageable.

Have you enjoyed the process of filmmaking? Oh yes, I made film at college and continued after finishing at Chelsea College of Art & Design for a couple of years. It’s a great process giving you real freedom to portray your work without the boundaries of the catwalk. I find it really exciting to work with other artists on project. Every artist you work with finds a new interpretation of your work, and it is good way to see your work through the eyes of others. I've always loved Toyin's work, I really can relate to the way Toyin thinks, and how she sees and interacts with the fashion industry. I was delighted when she agreed to work with me, and I am so happy with the results. Nice one Toyin!
