Anyone ever tried lagging shutter with strobes to get the model light in? I can do the math but don't know what the result might be like.

I don't feel like wasting time tinkering around on set Wednesday but I think it might look interesting.

Shooting for B&W. I'm looking to soften it up a bit... and I think it might just do the trick.

If anyone has any reference images it'd be great too!

If I understand correctly you basically use the model light and catch it before it goes (if its Profoto 7b-2 seconds) and you get a less powerful light than the flash from the strobe. I do that sometimes when im happy with the light i can see from model light- but its deceptive because as we all know your eye tricks you into thinking its brighter than it really is so bracket (if you shoot with film)
Will look dark and moody.

Maybe i misunderstood the question?

OOps, I think I meant to use extend instead of lagging. Idea is to include both strobe and model light in the same frame. Shoot low aperture and expose for half the power then fill in with model light via exposure time...

I just don't know how it would look like.

Just try it. Im no expert but if you cover the basic light set ups first so you know you have the shoot "In the bag" and leave some extra time for some experimenting after that. For me the extra time nearly always yields some exciting results but doesnt endanger the shoot. Last week i tried something a bit different with a shot i was finding a bit stale-and it turned out that was the shot everyone liked! Have fun!

Its nice to see peopl;e talking about the technical side of photography.
A slightly slower shutter speed bellow a 30th of a sec on film would possibly catch both, using a film camera, should create slight strobing and a sence of movement, maby hand hold the camera also. Experimentation is always exiting and fun.
