I am not so sure that in our point in time in history when so much has been tried, experimented and done in the field of PHOTOGRAPHY a technique could be qualified as 'COPYING' ? ... it is indeed all out there to be used and tried in order to achieve the desire result. Technique in the end is just a tool and no matter how much technique you may know and master ... what really matters in the end is INGENUITY !! .. Now that is something MAN RAY had and plenty of it in a time when photography was still a mine field of exciting things still to be tried ... Today's photographers are just LUCKY to have all that knowledge available to them and all at the tip of their fingers ... the only effort they have to make is to be EXCITINGLY CREATIVE, ORIGINAL , REFRESHING , INSPIRING when it comes to creating PHOTOGRAPHIC IMAGES ... I don't really understand all that NONSENSE about 'owning' or giving it a ' copyright ' to well known and obvious techniques that are freely available in the public domain for anyone who wants to use them ???

Good for you !! REMEMBER that it is all about trial and error and any mistakes you make along the way while experimenting .... it can only lead you to something exciting, refreshing and richer aesthetically ... it will most certainly help you to ' open ' your eyes and perception !!!

PS: It would be nice to see the result but then again that is up to you ... :)

This was the photo we used as the inspiration for shooting our jewelry editorial. We didn't want to do another studio looking shot, plus our studio was for product/jewelry photography, not model photography, as it's very small, so we had to make it work, to bring the element of "outdoor" shoot to the look, without having to shoot outside. We had to find a solution to our limitation. What made the photo worked was the studio lighting-to light it so that the model has a natural glow over the top of her head, as if sun light was shinning upon her. Once we achieved that, merging the 2 photos became very easy. So it's not about photoshop doing the work, the photographer has to know the lighting and how to balance the lighting so the 2 photos would work together.

Indeed ... it is all about knowing what works together ...

This technique is used in the industry so often that the only thing that makes it 'DIOR' ... is just the logo .......:)

PS: I love the sense of purity in the work of ANSEL ADAMS when it comes to capturing the beauty of the day and night .... it somehow makes one realise how today's photography relies HEAVILY on to much SUPERFICIAL EFFECTS .... Watching his PHOTOGRAPHY GENIUS feels like as if today's images are like young fresh models with overdone and heavy MAKE UP ! Like if the essence of beauty must be done away with for no purpose ..... so incredible ARTIFICIAL and rather meaningless ....

Hello HarryLeek,
to give you a very straight answer to your question , it is simply two pictures overlaid in Photoshop. The clouds were shot on my little 'point and press' Leica and Carmen was shot on old out of date 10/8 colour poalroid in daylight with exposures of 20 or 30 seconds.
To be honest with you by that point in what was a very difficult shoot I had adopted the mindset of just open the camera lens and some image will register on the film .I was quite enjoying the freedom of letting Carmen move around and refocusing blind and moving the camera during the exposure and in fact not even trying to time the exposure at all.I wanted to free myself of the reality of what was in front of me to try and find something I couldn't see just by looking. The styling was so strong that i knew if i could find some way of 'letting go' I would get to the essence of what Panos( the stylist) was trying to create.
I hope that is helpful.
I think the thrust of the comments by other people in response to your enquiry HarryLink is that you won't learn anything important about yourself and your own work and therefore your own 'problems' by just finding out how other people solve theirs.
Good luck in any case.
Nick

Hi Nick...I missed this live shoot (Clown), and Ive just had a look on the Archive for it...nothing 'cept one small image of you shooting...quite frustrating that many of your live shoots are simply that, miss 'em and you've missed 'em!? No footage to load ?? Ive seen the images in Another Magazine, GREAT! Always good to see you being more creative with your editorial stuff, Im sure advertising can be alittle restrictive, though you still get to play alittle, otherwise why book Mr Knight...!? So...footage of Clown shoot please....
