I read an article on David Bailey as he has a new book coming out featuring the lovely iconic Jean Shrimpton, photos taken in the 60's in NY. David expressed that the photos were shot for Vogue and w/just Shrimpton without makeup people or assistant helping, and that really contributed to the naturalness and spontaneity of the look of the photos. He felt that model photography has become such a huge production no different than a movie set, and models can't even do their own makeup and hair anymore, and they are completely lost if they were asked to do their own makeup. How do some of the commercial fashion photographers feel about this?

i think some production are getting bigger and bigger just to "impressed" the clients and showing to them this is what you paid us for. But for some production It depends on what does the clients really needs to get the whole concept come together thats why we need artists that could help visualise the idea. But of course if the shoot is simple, you dont need such a huge team to work with you simple as that.

the size of the production is no issue in my mind. however, the amount of retouching these days bothers me. why in the world after putting the concept together, time on the set, technique in lighting along with beautiful hair, make-up and styling, should you then go through endless editing? natural can be good too! beauty work has lost me as of late. editorial work is where artists and photographers can be just that ... without the needed hours and no-telling-how-many dollars in retouching.

film is beautiful. let's see the photo, not the photoshop.

*ends rant* apologies

...in the Netherlands some magazines agreed to participate in a project in which photos would be published without retouching them...and equally the ones retouched....a way to dispel the myth about perfect beauty....a really good idea !

Hair and makeup are luxuries...models should be able to do with and without them as well.

As a former model, I second this. Knowing how to do ones hair and make-up is part of the job. (I've had make-up artists ask for my signature.)
But, it's nice to have hair and make-up, the finished look is more polished.

..to much of it is another story...and furthermore the 'look' today will change tomorrow....... the make up industry is just part of fashion and will always be...perhaps the next look will be : to look as 'natural' as possible with the help of the right make up !...but I do agree that to much emphasis is put on the make up...

Hi mmbbaa,
i think you are more than right,. in the sence that if you are a model and you are posing its quite hard to look at yourself-hair at the same time!
and if you are a photographer and you do hair too(because you have to!),as i did quite a few times, its another extra of pressure and it consumes time too.
so its always better to have a hair stylist who is not bored and stands always right next to the camera during the whole shoot!

...but hair and make up are a must in fashion...it is all about the image, the look it wants to project with total clarity...otherwise it would't work....

The good retouching job should always retain the original intention, the organic beauty(unless original photos are so awful that require a complete make-over), whether it's in fashion shots or jewelry shots, most of the work should have been done during the shoot, and then photoshop is an extension of the original idea, unless it's a project meant to utilize photoshop as the focus to recreate.
