I would agree, working on a one to ome with models creates a more personell picture rather than having a whole room of people assisting with you which can break consentration on the shoot in hand.
Helmut Newton is one of the greats.

Helmut was one of the few fashion photographers with a storytelling style, his photos almost always had a sense of something was going on as the picture was taken. And it looked unforced, as if Helmut was just documenting, secretly taking pictures, when the whole set up was actually maniputlated and thought out in advance. Now adays, fashion photos often times are just with a model standing, sitting, walking, but the story telling aspect we rarely see, I bet it's really difficult to acheive, to capture the right moment, and he didn't shoot that many frames either, he was very efficient. Helmut was a natural at it he made it all looked so simple.

I can agree that indeed the 'poses' used by many professional and well known photographers have a lot to be desire for as far as originality goes......but then again it is a matter of what you want to convey with the 'story' if there is one and not forgetting the porpoise of the photograph....but in the end that ' story' can only be hold together by composition....mood...lighting....and the ability of the photographer to make that ' picture' somehow...his own....his message....his vision....his world......his trade mark....and ultimately the validity of it by its actual relevance and aesthetics of the time.....

Well recently I was going through a Vogue magazine from 13 years ago and Helmut Newton's images for that particular issue was the only set of images that could be compared with today's style.

..he is a great inspiration to many fashion photographers no doubt...
I see a lot of his influence particularly in the work of Inez Van Lamsweerde ...I like her early compositions because it had that cheeky element ....
